What To Make Of The Williams Signing
Posted by: Ben Wright on July 14, 2008 at 6:29PM EST

During a summer in which players signed mammoth contracts for exorbitant sums of money you have to give Don Waddell credit for keeping a cool head while still managing to upgrade his roster with quality pieces. Yes, he swung for the fences with Brian Campbell, and when that didn't work he had a good back-up plan in the form of Ron Hainsey. Then he went shopping for a forward and signed Jason Williams, who James Mirtle referred to on Saturday as one of the best forwards left on the market.

Neither player has ever been an All-Star, but both are young (27) and both are power play experts. Neither one is past his prime playing years and both of them were signed to very reasonable contracts. To mix sports metaphors, home runs are flashy but it's tough to build a team based on them. You need singles, doubles and triples as well. Hainsey and Williams should turn out to be solid extra-base hits for the Thrashers.

So what do you need to know about Jason Williams? He's 27, he's from London, Ontario and he can play center and right wing. He played almost exclusively on the wing in Chicago and that's where he'll probably fit here since we have Christensen, Little, Slater and White down the middle already (note that I listed them in alphabetical order, not in order of where I expect them to play).

Williams was a member of the 2001-02 Red Wings Cup team, though he only played 25 games in the regular season and nine in the playoffs. He was undrafted and signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in 2000. He played his junior hockey in Peterborough (as did Zach Bogosian). He was traded to the Blackhawks in 2006 and 13 goals, 23 assists and 36 points in 43 for Chicago last season. He missed all of December and most of January and February with a sports hernia but came back with a vengeance, scoring 17 points in the last 23 games of the season, including a six-game nine-point scoring streak. Four of his 13 goals were game-winners and he led the Blackhawks in PP time-on-ice per game when he played. He's 5-10 and 194 lbs, so he's an averaged sized NHL forward. He has a nose for the net and doesn't mind going into the corners. He had a 12.9 shooting percentage last season, better than all Thrashers except Kovalchuk.

As for where he'll fit, pencil him in on one of the top two lines as a right wing. It's way too early to play the line combination game but Williams could replace Recchi on Kovy's line. Recchi had 40 points in 53 games as a Thrasher. Williams had four fewer in 10 fewer games. Recchi had five goals and 14 assists on the PP with Atlanta. Williams had six goals and 13 assists with the man advantage (again in 10 fewer games). So while you shouldn't compare Williams to Recchi in terms of experience and presence, his numbers match up favorably and he's 12 years younger. Williams could turn out to be a great, affordable piece for the Thrashers, and if not he's only on a one-year deal (according to TSN) so there's really no downside.

Last summer the average age of the Thrashers went up through free agent signings. This year it has gone down considerably, and that's something for fans to be excited about. I still don't think Don Waddell is finished upgrading the roster, but so far I'm very pleased with what he has done upgrading the defense with Hainsey (and Bogosian) and the forwards with Williams.

This very well may be the best available of the ufa left --only time will tell. Ben, changing gears here, what is the story with Krog, Kwiatkowski and Haydar ? Are they considered career AHL players ? I thought for sure with the season thay all had in Chicago that they all would have a good chance to make the team this year--if not stolen in free agency ? Do you have any insight into this ?

Posted by: Matt on July 14, 2008 7:17PM EST
Ben - A little typo you made, it's a -duh- thing but I just wanted people who don't frequent these boards to come on and get confused heh. 5th paragraph down. "Recchi had 40 goals in 53 games as a Thrasher." The goals should be points :P

ricmik - Both Krog and Kwaitkowski both have signed with a Russian team and will be playing with them next season, but as for Haydar you never know what might happen. I personally loved when Haydar played with Atlanta the few games he dressed for.

As for Jason Williams, time will tell and with or without this addition, i'm still excited about the upcoming season. I'm getting tired of youtubing Kovalchuk goals to keep my hockey thirst sated for the time being. I want to see new goals from a new Thrashers team!

Wow.. didn't I predict all you whiners going to be praising the thrashers before or when the season starts?

People get on the boat so easily in the thrashers community. Learn to think for yourselves people. Don't let the media and other individuals make your mind up for you. But then again, that is an effect of laziness in this world. People are even too lazy to form their own opinions.

Krog was signed by Vancouver today for 1 yr. It is on www.tsn.ca/nhl.

Ben,
What is going on with Kwiatowski and Haydar?

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 14, 2008 7:29PM EST
I haven't heard anything about Haydar or Kwiatkowski.

The difficulty with both of them is that you have to be convinced that they are better options than the people currently on the roster at the positions in which they'd be useful. Is Haydar more skilled than some of the players on the fourth line? Maybe, but he needs to be on an offensive line to be effective. Can Kwiatkowski be as effective as he was in Chicago if he's playing on the third pair?

i watched some of jason williams goal highlights and he looks like a good goal scorer. hes acurate and a good slap shot, great sign, wish we they looked him up for a longer deal.

I like the pick-up and think Williams will provide some much needed secondary scoring if he stays healthy. I also think a trade is coming that might be very news worthy.

Don't look now but we might be putting a competitive team on the ice after all. One more move and some of you owe Don an apology for your harsh words. He's very sensitive. :)

Ben, sore today? Working out with the teenage players was a bold move my friend!

i say good bye to klee and bring up valabik, get rid of slater definitely, what a wasted 1st rd pick, grab up nagy and trade some picks for another high end offensive guy, or try for val filppula

My dream would be to get PM Bouchard or Vermette
...Vermette would be a gr8 center..I know him cause I live in Mtl (thats why I chose 2 Quebequers) and Mtl [sucks] plays 8 games against the Sens...
While the Sens played really badly he was the one that I thought played the hardest, plus he has 21,19,24->[53pts] goals in the last three seasons

But im happy with Williams...thx DW

Also Todd Marchant is on the trade block

ben, i've heard some rumors about brad mccrimmon leaving and i'm just wondering what he's been up to lately. apparently coach anderson is bringing in his own crew to help behind the bench (with a few exceptions, some figures with NHL experience, i'm guessing) and i was thinking how "beast" fit into that, if at all. thanks!

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on July 14, 2008 9:38PM EST
if Kozlov plays another bad season, we should trade him to Colorado for Svatos, Arnason and some1/thing else

Posted by: Robert on July 14, 2008 10:18PM EST
Another thing about Williams, I can't find the statistics anywhere to show it, but he is great in shootouts. The team already has Kozzy and Christensen and Kovy, but one more can't hurt.

Posted by: scott on July 14, 2008 11:11PM EST
i heard that the minnesota wild tired to trade pierre-marc bouchard to the florida panthers. that didnt go down so maybe the tharshers are working on a deal unless they are gonna just keep him if they cant get nothing good in return. bouchard is a top line center with great passing skills. 13 G 50 A 63 P in 81 games last year.he is a restricted free agnet so they might just resign him.

A Chicago-fan here. I'm so sad we lost Williams. He's a warrior. He wants to win and had a presence on the ice that made the teammates better. Your'e doing right to give Wadell credit! You are going to like him, I promise.

Posted by: "The Fake" Ben on July 15, 2008 6:53AM EST
First I would like to give DW kudos for staying strong and not spending a butt load of money on 3rd or 4th line players again and taking his time and making sure to get his guys. I think Ben said it best up top about triple and double guys.

Second what do you guys think of Marchant. Do you think he could be a 1st line center on this team. I know that we would have to trade for him or pick him off of waivers if Anaheim cuts him to clear up space.

Third What players count toward the slary cap. Do carrer AHL guys such as Krog and Hayder ( and yes I do know that they have player in the NHL and probally should of got more of a look last year) who had contracts with the Thrashers. Or does that contract then become the Wovles contract to pay. For an example Boris played in a couple of games at the end of the season did we pay for him all year or just for the games he came up in.
It may be a confussing question and sorry if my wording messed it up.

Looking forward to camp starting and the start of the season. Should be a fun Southeast Divsion this year with the competive nature or Anderson and the Washington coach as well as Melrose back into Coaching. And who sayd there is not Hockey in the south

Posted by: wing fan on July 15, 2008 7:07AM EST
Wing fan here. I am still PO'd we lost Williams to Chicago. he is really good on the shoot out, and would follow Pav and Z in Detroit. He was there most consistant scorer, yes as good as Pav! he is great on the PP at the point, and has a good shot. he never was given a real chance in Detroit bue to he was not drafted, and they had to play the high priced tallent. he did have 54 points playing center between Shanahan and Lang one season. given a chance you will love this guys game. Chicago will not like how this turns out.

I love it when other teams' fans take the time to come here and praise our transactions(especially Detroit...damn!). That, combined with Coach Anderson's infectious positive attitude, Bogo's performance in camp, and Ben's blog entries in particular, collectively get me really excited about the coming season. In spite of all the negative commentary all over the web about the Thrash, I really think there's a possibility we could surprise alot of people in 08-09.

one more front line move and I'll be happy......no real home runs, but serious upgrades......I know Slater and Larsen are good guys, but they should not be on an NHL roster......I see it more like this right now with no other additions:

Kovy-Crusher-Williams
Kozlov-Little-Army
Perrin-White-Thorburn
Boulton-Slater-Stuart

Would love to see:

Kovy-Bouchard/Nagy-Williams
Kozlov-Little-Army
Perrin-White-Crusher
Boulton-Thorburn-Stuart

Those are 3 true scoring lines and a checking line that can still put the puck in the net......the funny thing is that after the first line you really have lines 2 and 2A.......anyway, just one guy's opinion

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 15, 2008 9:53AM EST
robbie dee- I don't have any coaching news to share.

As for Marchant- No, I don't think he's a top line center. He's about to be 35 and he hasn't had more than 35 points in a season since 2002-03. Since the lockout he has had 34, 23 and 16 points. Those are third-line numbers, and we have a good cast of third-line guys.

Posted by: GaVaHokie on July 15, 2008 10:14AM EST
I agree Chicago is going to regret this move... I think they would have been better off trading Lang or Havlat and keeping Jason Williams.

Right now, I'd say there's some importance to Crusher or Little having a break-out season.

Posted by: Matt on July 15, 2008 10:37AM EST
Double and triple guys... We've already seen that having two top-notch NHL talent guys doesn't translate to wins with no depth. Having a straight-up super-star in Kovalchuk and balanced scoring on the 2nd and 3rd lines will translate to more wins than one Marian Hossa will. I applaud this signing (and the Hainsey signing too) and I'm starting to feel like we're going to be a lot better than I thought. If Stuart can come up and make the team, that would be great. No need to swing for the fences to win a cup this season. However, putting a solid team around Kovalchuk will hopefully be enough to convince him to stay. I feel like our defense is set with Toby, Hainsey, Bogosian, Exelby, Havelid, Klee and Valabik. Hell, that already leaves one man the odd one out. If Valabik can't cut it in the NHL, veteran like Klee could fill in fine. As far as forwards, I still think we need one more guyt that can contribute and I'd love to see Nagy come here and be that guy. Outside of Kovalchuk (who nobody doubts will put up monster numbers again), if players like Armstrong, Williams, Kozlov can put up 50+ point seasons, I think we're a playoff team and once you enter the second season, all bets are off. There was NO scoring outside of Kovalchuk on last year's Thrashers. If Kovalchuk gets shut down by an aggressive defense, there need to be many guys that can step up and provide offense and the offense needs to be coming from different guys night-in, night-out. That's a recipe for success. One signing and I'm starting to feel a whole helluva lot better about this team.

Get Nagy..thats it thats all

Nagy is a LW, and I don't believe he's ever played the C or RW postion.

Posted by: GaVaHokie on July 15, 2008 12:18PM EST
Ben... what's the latest on Lehtonen's contract? Isn't today (15th) the deadline for him to accept the team's offer?

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 15, 2008 12:58PM EST
It's the deadline for him to accept the qualifying offer but there are no real consequences to him not accepting it. It simply means he wants to negotiate a better deal.

Otherwise there's no news. I don't expect getting him signed to be a problem.

Posted by: Nouah on July 15, 2008 12:58PM EST
Hey JAmes_kovyboy, I though that I was the only Queb to cheer for the Thrashers!!!! That's good news, I won't feel lonely anymore. I agree with you the Habs sucks!!! I been raised at Quebec City so my father teach me how to hate them, I can't do anything against that, it is in my blood :)!!

I think Williams is a really good addition to our roster, if he stay healthy he will put big numbers playing with Kovy. But we still need some improvement upfront, I will send an offer sheet to Vermette, Bouchard and Fillipula, we still have a lot of space on our payroll. I will be willing to offer a long term contract to Bouchard and Vermette, come on Don you’ve been quiet so far and it is a good thing but its time now to do a big splash with RFA players, we have nothing to loose, we should build our future, our prospect roster is not so deep in talent.

I love to be the underdog for the next season; we will surprise a lot of team!!

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on July 15, 2008 1:47PM EST
OMG once I tried cheering for them at a Vancouver-Mtl game, but as soon as the Canucks scored I started screaming of joy...I hate them its in my heart! My heart is in Atl!!

Bouchard would be hard to get 'causeMinny already lost Demitra in FA...

Filpulla would be the easiest to get, cause the Sens without VErmette, theres only the top line left...

My favorite would be Bouchard, though...

I have a question..can we trade for one of those or we have to offer sheet

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on July 15, 2008 2:11PM EST
We could trade Slater and Klee or XLB to Ottawa for Vermette cause they are in need of defenseman and they lost Redden in FA and only signed Jason Smith)

Kovy-Vermette-Williams--High Scoring
Nagy-Little-Kozlov---------2nd line scoring
Perrin-Crusher-Army------Red Bull Energy
Boulton-Whtie-Thorburn---knock ppl around and can provide (together) 30 goals in a season

D is so good I cant believe it
Havelid-Enstrom----This rocks hard
Bugs-Hainsey-------New Thrasher Soldiers
XLB-Valabik---------Depending on Valabik, this D can crush hard

Posted by: Matt on July 15, 2008 3:02PM EST
When you take a step back and look at it, out defense is indeed impressive... where'd that come from? Hell, dare I say we have the best corp of defensemen in the Southeast division all of the sudden? However, I think Florida might still have the edge in that category....

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on July 15, 2008 3:23PM EST
Yeah but Bouwmee, Karlis Skrastins [whatever his name is] might be dealt and Van Ryn has some injury problems...I think we have the best :D

And I agreee...where the f**k did it come from!?

Kudos DW

Ben and others,
How can we even talk to Bouchard, Vermette, or Bouwmeester, or Filippula? If they are all in arbitration with their teams, they can't talk to any other teams outside of the teams that they have been with. For instance, Filippula can't talk to anyone but Detroit, Vermette with Ottawa, and Boucahrd with Minnesota; I was under the impression that these players had to be released or been given rights to talk to other teams earlier this month.

Falconer on Do the Thrashers Have Talons? blog was talking about some other guys who may not be able to be signed by their teams. One guy he was talking about was Mike Knuble from Philly. He was saying that Philly may not be able to afford to re-sign Knuble; if that is the case, I hope we could get him. Falconer made that point, and I am sure that Knuble is not the only one in this situation.

It makes me wonder about Meszaros from Ottawa too. I haven't heard anything about him. We really could use another big name forward.

Another site that I have seen that has some good rumors is: www.spectorhockey.com. He sometimes has some good things to say.

James Kovyboy,

Quit projecting the lines! The only ones I would be sure of is that Kovalchuk will be on the 1st line of forwards, and Havelid and Enstrom will be the 1st line for defense, and that Lehtonen will be the starting goalie. Other than that, the rest is speculation. Who knows who is going to be where? I would just love to see DW and ASG sign one more good forward like Knuble or someone of his ability, leadership, and class.

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 16, 2008 10:42AM EST
Knuble has a contract Steve. We can only get him via trade. Likewise with all of the RFA's you mentioned. They can't be signed to offer sheets if they filed for arbitration and can only be acquired via trade.

Meszaros isn't a forward- he's a defenseman.

Posted by: h on July 16, 2008 2:38PM EST
all those guys have to come over on some kind of trade except Meszaros. I'd love to see them go after Meszaros.....you can never have too many defensemen....just gives us more flexibility for a trade......if the RFAs go to arbitration, that gives them a one year deal before they become UFAs next year (I think)......may be able to make a trade just before or after arbitration......
