Jim Slater played in the "Cold War", an outdoor game hosted between Slater's Michigan State Spartans and their rival Michigan Wolverines on October 6, 2001. Slater scored with 47 seconds left in regulation to help the Spartans earn a 3-3 tie in the game that set a new hockey attendance record.
