Thrashers Hire Assistant Coaches
Posted by: Ben Wright on July 24, 2008 at 3:42PM EST

If you haven't been to the homepage in the last little while you may not have seen that we have hired two assistant coaches. Assistant coach Steve Weeks and Video coach Tony Borgford will remain in their current positions while former Rochester Americans Head Coach Randy Cunneyworth and former Chicago Wolves Assistant Coach Todd Nelson will join John Anderson's coaching staff.

I have never met Randy Cunneyworth but he is widely credited with developing Buffalo's top-notch group of young players that came up through their system over the last few seasons. While working as the head coach of the Sabres' AHL affiliate he coached (to name a few) Jason Pominville, Paul Gaustad, Derek Roy, Brian Campbell, Ales Kotalik, Ryan Miller and our own Chris Thorburn. There was speculation during the season that Cunneyworth would get some serious consideration for a head coaching job in the NHL this year so to land him as an assistant is a big deal.

I actually ran into Todd Nelson on my way back from Chicago yesterday. As I got to my gate at O'Hare there he was in a Thrashers polo, waiting to fly down here and sign the paperwork to make everything official. He was also coming down from Chicago to look for a house, but one of his biggest priorities as he makes the move is to find a local hockey program for his son. That tells you how much the guy loves the game. Here he is about to sign an NHL coaching contract and he's worried about where his boy is going to play. You have to love that kind of passion. In chatting with Nelson it was obvious that he has a great relationship with John Anderson and that he really wants to help change the culture in Atlanta. Chicago has been a prime destination for AHL free agents for years because it's such a fun place to play and both John Anderson and Todd Nelson want Atlanta to be viewed the same way.

While our coaching staff may not have a wealth of NHL coaching experience (Steve Weeks has 10 seasons under his belt and Tony Borgford has two) but they've combined for 1973 games on the ice at the NHL level and the new additions have a proven track record of developing young players.

Ben, Since the coaching staff is now set, do you think that a big trade will be the next big news for the Thrashers?

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 24, 2008 5:16PM EST
I'm not sure what Waddell has planned, but trade season is approaching. Generally the last 2 weeks of July are quiet and then things start to heat up in august once arbitration awards are announced and teams have to clear cap space or trim payroll to fit budgets.

How old is his son? There are some pretty competitive teams in town. He should not have a problem finding a good fit.

Atlanta you got a great asst. coach in Todd Nelson. He knows the game and puts in 110% everytime. He will be missed in Chicago. His kid is a great hockey player too works hard and takes after his dad in giving it his all.

While in Chicago did you get to check out the Blackhawks convention over the weekend or attend the Wrigley Field Press day?

whats the deal with glen murray? the boston bruins put him on waviers today? whats the chance the tharshers pick em up? BEN you know anything about that?

Glen Murray was not claimed by any team and it's expected that he will bought out. At that point he will be an unrestricted free agent.

I went to a White Sox game but didn't attend the Blackhawks FanFest or the Wrigley field press conference. FanFest was over before I got there and the press conference was at the same time as our conference. I did eat some great pizza though.

I'm really stoked about Cunneyworth... this is great news.

I gotta believe that Buffalo dropping Rochester as it's affiliate really helped open the door for us to grab Cunneyworth.

Ben,
Any idea or word as to when the new guys Jersey numbers might get set? The idea of a new Bogey Jersey is hard to picture without a accurate number on it. Are we going to get any news on him signing soon?

Posted by: Ben Wright on July 25, 2008 10:38AM EST
I likely won't hear anything about him signing until it happens. It will happen though, and when it does I expect him to wear #4. He wore it in junior, it was his agent's number (Bobby-somebody-or-other), and nobody here wears it.

Ben,
Thanks a lot, #4 for Bogey!
Any ideas on Reasoner and Williams?
19 and 29 are taken with the Thrashers unless maybe Larsen does not make the team or Colby was willing to go to another number?

Ben, I'm not sure how much interaction you have with players during the off season, other than camps and events. When you hear of how the players are reacting to their new coaches, please let us know, Thanks!!!

Will do BN. I probably won't come across any of them until early august when they start skating again.

I love the coaching changes. This just may be what we've been waiting for. New perspective and solid coaches with something to prove. I'd like to see some big name trades, but it seems to be coming together, albeit more slowly than a lot of us would like.

Good news about fresh start with the coaching staff. Someon posted in a previous blog or in the forums about the Thrashers being a revolving door for coaches which I found quite ridiculous. John is the 3rd coach for this franchise. Don, acting in that role, but he is GM/VP not a head coach! Getting a new staff that refreshes thing going back to Curt is a good thing.

Speaking about Curt, good luck in Grand Rapids, under the Red Wings org. Sure a lot of ex Thrasher ties back to Detroit now. Sure hope some of that winning leaks back our way as well.

Ben, thanks for fixing the link.

Maybe these new coaches will finally have a system that works here in ATL. Nine years is a long time. Now, what to do about DW ???

Dont let him near the ice. Especially in Duluth!
