The New Ilya Kovalchuk
Posted by: Ben Wright on November 14, 2007 at 12:53PM EST

I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around how good Ilya Kovalchuk has been this season. Remember last year when some media outlets mentioned Hossa as a possible MVP candidate around the midpoint of the season? Kovalchuk is playing better than that. A week ago everyone was raving about what a beast Henrik Zetterberg has become, but now Ilya is just two points behind him and two goals ahead of him with a league-leading 15 goals in 18 games. He's third in overall scoring with 25 points, just behind Zetterberg and Sidney Crosby, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.

But here's the most remarkable thing to me- Ilya is a different person than he was a year ago. He used to be somewhat shy in the locker room, but now he's sticking around to talk to the media. With the reputation he had early on his career for being a bit of a hot dog (not that you cold blame a teenager for showing off with the skills that he had back then) you might think that he's sticking around to talk about how great he has been playing, but that's just not the case.

Getting Ilya to talk about himself right now is like pulling teeth. When he was asked about his OT goal last night the first thing he said was that it was all about Todd White's hard work. He's deflecting attention from himself and heaping praise on his teammates at every opportunity. I'm convinced that if a reporter offered him $1,000 in cash to take credit for a goal he'd pass it up right now. In the two or three minutes I listened to him last night after the game I don't think he used the words 'me' or 'I' more than once. Instead it was all about 'them', 'us' and 'we'.

"We're having a lot of fun."
"Things are going well for us."
"We're a good line."
"We were the better team tonight."
"They're good linemates."
"It was all because of them."

Ilya Kovalchuk has been a great hockey player for a very long time, but now he's emerging as a great teammate. There can be a big difference between the two, and now Ilya is both.

It's enough to make you want to vote for him as an All-Star.

Great comments Ben and right on too.

Ilya Kovalchuk is my favorite player and has been since I started watching Thrasher games. He's an amazing athlete, a humble person, and generally a class act all around from what I've seen. I look forward to the day I can frame the AJC sports section with a big full-page color shot of Kovy hoisting the Cup at Phillips Arena on the front.

AMEN! He is leading this team by example and has been the man! His hat trick against Ottawa in a losing effort may turn out to be the turning point in this season.

Maybe the Governor prayed for him in the offseason. Its been a joy to watch this happen- the unleashing. Get out there and vote for the boy! And Hoss.

It's time for people to stop comparing the man we see today to the 18 year old like there were no years in between. Part of what makes Kovy such an incredible player is his passion. Sometimes that shows up in different ways, but that makes him fun to watch. He played just as hard last year, with just as much passion and little or no help on his line and scored 42 goals. He is not selfish about scoring, he just wants to win. Last year, he set others up to score so many times and they missed the shot. He talked about getting two points in every interview and not about Kovy. The only thing I see different is he is more outgoing. Good for him.

They are looking like the team we expected. We need more scoring power from the other lines, or everyone else will figure out how to play us. It looks like that is starting to happen. Perrin is moving up in ranks. Koslov is steadfast as always. Everyone is making shots on goal.

PW,
Yes, he has developed as an overall player every year. But how many times did we see him- last year- do the razzle dazzle with the puck and miss the net. This year- he finds the net. Every time. Something has changed.

One of the changes is help on his line. Todd White is a much better center than Kovy had at all last year and being on a line with Hossa doesn't suck! Slava is lost without Hossa on his line. I love our team, but Slava on the All-Star ballot is funny. We need to find Slava some help because he needs to come through with another 80 point season in order for us to make some noise. GO THRASHERS!!!

Thanks mastiffgal, my point exactly. The problem was not Kovy, he played as well as ever. The problem goes back to the who ever takes resposiblity for putting the team together and setting up the lines. Last year, he was the line - forward-center and sometimes defense. I think he was contained in some way as well and this year he has been "unleashed " again. When he was the only threat on the line, 4 or the 5 people could concentrate on him and still got 42 goals. Some of the razzle dazzle was to draw the other team away so his line mates could score. They could not get the job done.
I am hoping that Todd White steps up and gets in sinc with Kovy. I was impressed Todd the night Kovy was injured. However, we have what - $10 mil tied up in centers and do not have a number one center. Compare that to other teams in the NHL.
Slava deserves respect. He will make it work, he always has. He is an assest on the ice but also teaches the young men.
Good year or bad year, I will stand by the Thrashers. I would like to see our players have the team that will give them a chance to get their names on the cup. Again, some of those decision are made before the season starts.

I'm not worried about Slava. Lost in all the hubbub after the dramatic win over Florida is the fact that Kozlov had a seven game point streak snapped. He's playing well with Little and Perrin and he's getting time on the PP. He'll be fine.

It's so much fun watching Kovy this year!! Don has given him the freedom to do his thing and it's certainly working. It's always been exciting to watch him on the ice but this year he's unbelievable!! I'm also excited to see Hoss get back in the groove.

I can't wait to be cheering for our guys during the All-Star game!!
