Sean Grace Chimes In on Playoff Hockey
Posted by: Ben Wright on April 15, 2007 at 11:01PM EST

(The following was submitted by Thrashers fan correspondent Sean Grace)

And you thought this would easy

This season, though successful, has been exhausting. Nothing has come easy for our hockey club. We’ve endured inexplicable losing streaks, freakish bad luck and frequent frustration. The elevated expectations may have altered our perception of the 2006-07 campaign, but in any case, it’s been a struggle. So when the puck behaved similarly to the “magic bullet” involved in the JFK assassination during game two, I was not surprised. The Rangers first goal was cheap and a fluke but also a representation of the difficult road to success that the Thrashers have traveled.

Despite the excruciating moments, this team has ultimately achieved. The means have justified the ends all season long. This is why I say that counting this team out is premature. This Thrasher team has a track record of getting it done in the end. Don’t give up hope Blueland, it ain’t over.

Game Three Victory = Game Seven

If you’ve been reading along with my rantings this year you may have noticed that I’ve made a few predictions that have been accurate. For example, in January I told you exactly how many points it would take to win our division. So now, here is the Mac Daddy of all predications:

If we win game three in New York, there will be a game seven in Atlanta, which will be won by Atlanta in OT.

Print it, put it on your refrigerator and believe it as truth. Here is why:

1. The Law of Averages – We have been on the business end of every bad break thus far. This is going to change. Also, Lundquist has been a little lucky. Pucks have been hitting him in the head, off the toe, etc. Eventually, these pucks will find the back of the net.
2. The War of Brothers Hossa – Marian is going to prevail in the end. He has been a ghost so far and this will change in game three.
3. The Power Play – Lets face it, our PP sucks. It’s been putrid for a long time. It’s due. Coach, I beg you, take Havelid off the PP unit. He is killing us by shooting directly into the chins of Defenders from the blue line.
4. The Hockey Gods – They don’t play favorites. Sometimes you just have to wait for your kiss from above. Early in game three, something is going to happen that will turn this series around.
5. Overall Talent – We are just better than they are if you compare rosters. Eventually this edge in talent is going result in wins.

Thrasher fans, the best we can do is call on our crazy superstitions on Tuesday. If you think that your Huey Lewis and the News tee shirt is good luck, for God’s sake, wear it! Light a candle, drink a warm glass of chicken fat, wear your underwear outside your pants, do what you do. I’ve got a pretty booklet of playoff tickets and I’d like to use most of them.

Night One

The rumor is true. There is a dramatic difference between a regular season and post-season atmosphere. To begin with, our arena looks great. There is bunting, flags, player’s numbers painted into the stairs of the lower bulb and neon blue lights outlining the ice. About 1000 people gathered for warm-ups. We were ready. The Ushers wore game faces. The beer vendors had looks of determination. A long time coming had arrived. Everyone, even the AJC, was ready. And then it began.

It started about eight minutes before the puck dropped, somewhere in the 200 section behind the goal. “Let’s go Thrashers”, grew and roared through the bulb and chills ran down my spine. We’ve pictured this moment since 1999. It was more electric than imagined. The energy is our building before play began was more intense than any sporting event I’ve attended and I’ve witnessed some great events. And then it began.

Exelby leveled Jagr, Sutton and Larsen connected on hard checks and Bobby Holik hit everyone. Game one versus the Rangers was played at a fever pitch. Ultimately we lost after a last-minute power-play frenzy failed to yield a goal. If there is such a thing as a good loss, this was it.

At long last, our city got behind our club. The Atlanta mass media “discovered” a local NHL team and helped to create a stir. The Thrashers are buzzing in the local consciousness, finally.

The highlight of our first playoff game was the enthusiasm of the crowd. The passion that the masses in blue brought to the party was shocking. The undivided attention of 18,500+ hung on every play. The crowd did there best to will this team to victory. My wife sounds like Kermit the Frog, if he smoked a carton of cigarettes, today. Her voice is gone.

Folks in cities like Toronto, Montreal and Boston will always thumb their noses at southern hockey. The fact is that hockey is being played by Atlanta this week and Toronto only has Blue Jay baseball to watch. We can thank the Islanders for knocking the sense of entitlement out of Leafs and their evil minions, (AKA fans), by capturing the 8th spot in the East.

Speaking of which, here is a little song I threw together for our friend and Captain of the Leafs.

The Ballad of Mats Sundin

Mats sits alone in silence
A broken hearted man
No media to complain to
Soggy tissues in his hand

No need to tape the ankles
The skates are growing dull
Restless like a toddler
His shame he’s left to mull

(Bridge)

For there is no joy in Toronto
The sun won’t shine today
The Islanders of the city
Came and blew the Leafs away

(Chorus – 2X)

Dim the lights, close the curtain
For number 13
Cries the balled of Mats Sundin

He blames the NHL
He blames the Southeast
“I’m entitled to play today”
I’m a legend to say the least.

But his plea is left unanswered
As a tantrum starts to seethe
He turns on the TV
To the Thrashers on NBC

As Jagr lands face first
Matty feels his pain, takes a knee
His head still a-ringing
From the hit from XLB

For there is no joy in Toronto
The sun won’t shine today
The Islanders of the city
Came and blew the Leafs away

Dim the lights, close the curtain
For number 13
Cries the balled of Mats Sundin

He calls up Domi
He chats with Darcy T
It’s just unfair, they agree
Why now and why me

The ice has all but melted
A long summer, no reprieve
As Matty shanks the 7th iron
A triple bogey he will receive

For there is no joy in Toronto
The sun won’t shine today
The Islanders of the city
Came and blew the Leafs away

Dim the lights, close the curtain
For number 13
Cries the balled of Mats Sundin

See ya next year Mats.

Chins up folks!

You Loyal Servant,
Sean Grace

You're an idiot. How do you figure the Thrashers have more talent on paper? We're old and it shows. Also, Lundquist lucky? I guess you know he's been the best goalie in the league over the last month! I'm a Thrasher fan, but you are embarrassing. We don't need to wait for hockey gods or pretend that all the breaks have gone against us, we just need to play better hockey. End of story and thanks for nothing.

yo goon you're cracking me up

Posted by: Sean Grace on April 16, 2007 8:17AM EST
That's right Goon, let it out.

No question Lundquist has been excellent this year, particularly down the stretch but he is also had some luck. Momentum is going to turn and we are going to light him up tomorrow.

And of course we need to play better hockey. Do you think that really needs to be written. Slava, Walt and Hossa have been silent.

Also age has nothing to do with talent. Our "old guys" like Holik have been beating the the hell out of the New Yorkers from the onset of this series.

Thanks for having an opinion. Next time you might want to just state it and not make it personal.

Hi,
I'm agree with you when you say :
"Game Three Victory = Game Seven"
I really hope that the Trashers will come back in the series with a win in NY on Tuesday ! If not...it would probabely means a sad 0-4 lost in the series...

thank you sean grace for making me laugh today. i really needed it. great song!

THE TRASH ARE TRYING TO PLAY FILTHADELPHIA FLYER HOCKEY FROM THE 70S. IT DOESN'T WORK IN THE NHL ANYMORE. THEY ARE BIG, SLOW AND A BUNCH OF GOONS. LUNQUIST LUCKY? HE HAS BEEN THE BEST GOLATENDER IN THE NHL OVER THE 2ND HALF OF THE SEASON.

As always, great post Sean!! I can't wait for the next one...after we win Game 7!

Posted by: alan b on April 16, 2007 5:32PM EST
Nobody ever said that we had the best team in the league...but we DO have a very good team.
Nobody, seriously believed we gonna win the cup this year...but we Do have a team that WILL advance beyond the first and the second round of playoffs.
The Rangers are a mediocre team....and our team was a little bit afraid of Playoffs and everything...If the regular season would have continued we had kept beaten them up...
The next game will be tight..but after that, our guys won't have anything left to loose and we'll finish them up...They seem to play better with real good teams and when the clock starts ticking.
And they have to know...away of the pressure of their own fans....we're very proud of what they've accomplished so far....and we love them because they never give up....just have fun, clear our zone in defense, skate smart, watch your energy, shoot like crazy...and finish them...and come back in Atlanta to celebrate together.

Have we lost the ability to edit this site? It would be nice if kids could still go on this site without reading this garbage. At least he spelled impeccable correctly.

Classless!

The "Law of Averages" you refer to is actually the "Law of Large Numbers." Thus, it will only hold true if the Thrashers shoot the puck more and stop giving up nearly 40 shots a game.

THRASHER FANS, THIS SERIES IS OVER. YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE IN THE FIRST 2 GAMES AT YOUR OWN RINK AND YOU BLEW IT. NOW YOU COME TO OUR HOUSE, THE "WORLDS MOST FAMOUS AND ROWDIEST ARENA". YOU HAD A GOOD REGULAR SEASON AND THATS WHERE IT WILL END FOR YOU ATLANTANS. LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!

Typical Rangers fan, big and dumb. I'm suprised you could read the whole post, good for you.

Man, you Thrashers' fans should feel intimidated going to play in a place where fans can make up brand new and exiciting adjectives to describe how cool their area is.

Also, sorry to burst your ego bubble there, but MSG is definately not the "world's most famous arena". The US as a nation maybe ... but definately not the world. But then again I know how you Americans love to think the world ends at your borders, so I'll excuse the ignorance.

Please fire Bob Hartley now. If not, I will buy as many seats as possible next season so the arena will be empty. Hartley, after game 3 you have embarrased Atlanta along with Kari"let all in".Pleazzzzzzzzz fire Hartley. Send him back to that windshield factory.

Outmaned and outclassed - the Thrashers just mailed it in tonight. Rangers complete the sweep Wednesday. No whining about bad bounces or fluke goals after tonight's humiliating defeat.

Posted by: Shaun on April 18, 2007 12:23AM EST
Why fire the coach? It's clear the players are the problem not the coaching. Kari has sucked this series but at some point the kid has to play hockey. You can't blame him when all those pucks never get cleared though. They aren't playing good hockey and it's horribly obvious. And who is Hossa? I thought he was one of the leading scorers in the NHL.... guess he's having an identity crisis because he's no where to be seen out there.

Game 3 was an embarrassment. Kovalchuk is the only guy out there that wants to win.... it's sad.

Dont Give up! make history and come back with Game 4 then back to the ATL to win to make history
you ALL CAN DO IT!

You are certainly a nut. You have no clue. how did those 7 goals taste last night. Now the broom is out. you remind me of those fans from Long island, Icelander fans that is

OMG this blog is SAD! I won't mind if there is some bias opinion but the guy who wrote the blog needs to wake up and face the facts. Your crazy thinking that this unexperience and overrated team can comeback and beat exprerienced ranger team. Get your facts straight when you write something on the blog. 1) Thrashers are not the better team "in paper compare" to the rangers. 2) Yes, Thrashers have talent. But are u on drugs thinking that thrashers have better talent than the rangers. 3) Rangers beating the Thrashers 3 in a row = Rangers are a better team and stop acting diluting yourself in to thinking luck was on lundqvist side. If you watch the game closely KIDS, Hedberg and Lethonen was also lucky.

Contrary to the article above, I'm a Canadian hockey fan living in Vancouver and I love the fact that hockey is in the South! My one comment is that no matter what happens in game 4 and beyond this year, keep supporting your team loud, proud (and sold-out) all through next season. It will be that much sweeter when you finally make some noise in the playoffs if you've been there all along, instead of having a largely empty arena for much of the season. It's a wild ride all the way, enjoy the playoffs while you can. There are some western Canadian fans pulling for a 4-straight-wins upset!!

7-0.

i would expect that as a final score in gym class.

i just reffed intramural floor hockey and the final score was 10-4. THAT IS CLOSER THAN 7-0.

wow... The Thrashers look terrible.
what happened to Kovalchuk?
What happened to Hossa?
what happened to Lehtonen?
what happened to Holik?

what a waste of a season. and they are increasing ticket prices.
Have fun on the golf course guys

I don't blame Atlanta for having an awful blog. You've had a team for what, 5 years? Tempering your expectations and writing something more insightful than "I've predicted one thing right this year, so what I think must be correct," and "they have been lucky and we have not," and "we're due" will come with time. Pleasantries aside however, you guys looked like an AHL team last night. I hope Sean Grace is having fun eating crow today.

I support my team. We just need some new defensive players. Let's try and get free agents so we dont give up other talent. Also, we need a NEW COACH! Hart has made way too many bad decisions. Lets get a better system. Our offense is too "one and done". Ironically, we only set-up a play on the power play... then we dont shoot! What!?!? Kari has a bright future, but coach should never played him, then shoulda pulled him at 2 or 3 goals, or pulled him at five in game 3. Why start him? Why keep him in? Why let him get peppered after the team quit? Bad, Bad, and Bad.

I TELL YOU I AM DONE WITH THE NHL.THIS IS SUCH BULLCRAP WITH ALL THE CALLS THAT THEY MAKE AND DON'T MAKE.I WILL NEVER SPEND ANOTHER PENNY ON ANY SPORT THAT IS NOT REGULATED AND HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THERE ACTIONS.SAY-LA-VE.GOOD LUCK.GO THRASHERS.BUT I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER THING OR SUPPORT ANYTHING FROM THE NHL.

hey sean grace. great prediction on a thrashers comeback. you clearly don't know anything about hockey. if you watch replays closely, you will see that lunqvuist purposely tries to headbutt the puck away. the puck doesn't just hit him in the head. he has been the best goalie in the second half of the season and in the playoff. therefore, i don't think luck has too much to do with it. on paper, thrashers may match up but its obvious they had no idea what to do when jagr had the puck with holik on the bench. the thrashers obviously had no idea about how much grit and sandpaper is required in the playoffs. the same grit and sandpaper provided by sean avery. now the thrashers end up looking like fools for trading away young prospects for veterans that didn't produce. way to go guys. maybe next year. LET'S GO RANGERS.
