Lines Take Shape At Morning Skate
Posted by: Ben Wright on February 28, 2008 at 12:57PM EST

"This is a great opportunity for them to come in and establish themselves."

So said Mark Recchi after the morning skate today when talking about Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen. The consensus among Recchi, Chris Thorburn and Joel Kwiatkoswki, who all played with Armstrong and Christensen in Pittsburgh, is that both players will be well-loved in Atlanta and will thrive in their new roles. Armstrong is the more outgoing of the pair and plays a more physical role, while Erik Christensen is a high-skill player who the other three former Penguins said was under-utilized in Pittsburgh.

"They had him flipping around on wing and all of that," said Recchi. "He's not a winger. He's just a natural centerman. Very high skill level. He shoots the puck great. He passes the puck great. He's a strong skater and good kid. He's going to be asked to play every power play and be an offensive player and I think you're going to see him thrive here."

Christensen and Armstrong will get a prime opportunity to showcase their skills tonight at home when the Thrashers host the Islanders. The pair will play together on the second line with Eric Perrin as the middle lines get a bit of a makeover.

Kovalchuk will stay with Todd White and Mark Recchi on the first line, Eric Perrin will play left wing with Christensen in the middle and Armstrong on the right side of the second line, Kozlov and Holik stay together with Bryan Little to their right and the checking line of Boulton, Slater and Thorburn stays intact. Brad Larsen, Mark Popovic and Steve McCarthy are tonight's healthy scratches. Kwiatkowski will play with Exelby as the defensive pairings remain unchanged from Tuesday night. Here is your updated lines chart.

Christensen will also play on the top power play unit, along with Bryan Little, Mark Recchi, Ilya Kovalchuk and Toby Enstrom. Armstrong was one of Pittsburgh's top penalty-killers so he'll see plenty of ice time doing the same here in Atlanta.

Check the video player for Don Waddell's media scrum. It should be up shortly. The one thing I got Don to address which hadn't been mentioned by any other media is whether or not a fourth alternate captain will be named. At this point there are no plans to name one but that doesn't mean it won't happen if the coaching staff feel it's needed.

For those who are curious about these sorts of things, Colby Armstrong took over the locker room stall used by Marian Hossa and Erik Christensen is in a stall between Eric Boulton and Slava Kozlov.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?!

WHAT HAVE POPOVIC AND MAC DONE TO BE SCRATCHED!?!??!? PLAY GOOD!?

WHAT HAS ZHITNIK DONE TO PLAY NIGHT AFTER NIGHT!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Why do we keep the 1st line intact?!

Recchi on Kovys line DOES NOT WORK....that first line is a joke...if Kovy didnt have to take the game into his own hands, they would be pointless...

unreal....

DW must be wearing a shirt somewhere saying "I LOVE VETS"

I agree 100%--sit Zhitnik down, he was the main reason we lost in Montreal. Two stupid penalties when he was out of position because he can't move his fat a**.

I'd rather watch us lose with a team full of Macs!!! He gives 125%, which is a rarity on this underachieving team.

And I love Recchi, but he's too slow to play with Kovi.

I'm still wondering when XLB is gonna sit. He's been bad most of the year. It seems he has a free pass to mess up. Zhitnik should be playing 3rd line minutes until he can get his head out of the clouds. I too would like to see the 1st line shaken up a bit. I was hoping someone like Armstrong would play on Kovy's line. Maybe some day...

I have to argue this one... moving bryan little to the wing with holik could be disasterous.

leave it to DW to mess this one up. the first line has to be broken up, honestly what has white, kovy, and recchi done? zilch.

i could go on and on, but ill just wait and see how things pan out tonight.

I will say however, DW needs to get a coach. His GM skills are ok, but his coaching and vision for this team is mediocre at best.

Anyways, ill have fun watching the game tonight, shoudl be interesting to say the least.

You people are nuts......McCarthy is a -23 in 39 games.....are you kidding me? That guy is NOT an NHL player......Zhitnick should sit too, but McCarthy should never play again..... -23?? Also, X needs to go too.....or at least find someone to play with him who can clean up his typical mistakes......X turned over the puck mnay times in last 2 games and they typically led to an opponent goal.....I would definitely like to see Popovic get more ice time.....let's see how the new lines work before we crush them......

I agree with those of you that think Zhitnik should be a scratch, but how do you scratch a player that is making $3.5mm a year? You can't do it! Let's hope that we upgrade our defense this summer because McCarthy, Zhitnik and Exelby have looked horrible this year and should be playing in the AHL.

Little may get some time centering Recchi and Kovalchuk if White spends much time killing penalties. If Kovy's line is ready to go after a PK and White is coming off the ice Little will take his place.

Army as RW on the first line. NUFF SAID.

Hey Ben-
Based on the deal landed by Lundqvist of the Rangers, how much do you think it will cost us to resign Kari this summer? Thanks!

Posted by: Will on February 28, 2008 2:41PM EST
as someone on the Nasty Nest forum said... Army on Kovy's line = the Kovalchuk Army line.

Posted by: Ben Wright on February 28, 2008 2:58PM EST
Kari probably won't be able to command the kind of money Lundqvist is getting, but a lot of it will depend on the term he is looking for. I'm hesitant to throw out a number, but I'd say in the large ballpark of $3-5 million would be a good starting point if he's looking for a long-term deal. I don't expect it to be difficult to sign him.

Zhitnik must have some pictures of Waddell or something.

Just got the new Hockey News fresh out of the Mailbox. Kari is rated at #30 for goaltenders in the NHL Falling from #11 last year. I blame a lot of that on piss poor Defensive support (see my Zhitnik comment above).

You're going to quote plus/minus numbers on our team? If you got a dollar for each guy who is on the plus side, you might be able to get lunch at McDonalds.

McCarthy actual plays at 100% of his ability and then some. Who else on our team is in that category and has the skill to match?

Enstrom comes to mind immediately, but no one else.

If we're going to be a lousy team, at least put the guys on the ice who have some respect for the fans and APPRECIATE the honor of being on the ice in the NHL.

Losing is bad enough, but when I have to watch Shitnick and others give a half hearted effort, I am insulted as a fan.

If you got a dollar for each guy who is on the plus side, you might be able to get lunch at McDonalds.

As of now I believe you would get $1. Last I checked among guys who have been with the club the whole season, Havelid is +5. Enstrom is even and everyone else is a minus player. Good thing McDonald's came out with the dollar menu.

I've gotta be honest, I'm getting tired of seeing Ex in the lineup. He has not been good this year. Even if we make him a healthy scratch for a couple of games, maybe that would wake him up. And the first line.. I really think they need to be seperated. I agree with the person who said Rex is a little too slow, I think we need speed on that top line to keep up with Kovy. But I'm sure we'll see that soon.

Aside from those couple of flaws (IMO) I can't wait for the game tonight!

How the hell can Little play with Holik??? Trade him and put Koz-Little-Haydar if we do this:

Kovy-White-Perrin
Rex-Christ-Army
Koz-Little-Haydar
Greek Gods

THIS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

How many goals do we have to give up from our goalies (Kari & Moose) misplaying pucks before they're told to keep their a$$ in the crease?

Posted by: h on February 29, 2008 10:02AM EST
Even on this team +\- matters.....there is a big difference between -23 in 39 games and -6 in 62 games......

Posted by: gategirl on February 29, 2008 2:29PM EST
Ben --- do you know if the players read the blogs, the message boards, or articles about the team or themselves

Posted by: Eric on February 29, 2008 3:54PM EST
Ben--do you think DW will draft a first round goalie to pressure Kari into playing better. If he wants a pay raise he should raise his level of play. I don't care how bad his defense is, he isn't playing like a guy who deserves more money.
