John Anderson Hired As Head Coach
Posted by: Ben Wright on June 20, 2008 at 1:59PM EST

Atlantathrashers.com and the Blueland Blog have been informed that John Anderson was hired as the new head coach of the Thrashers this morning. Anderson coached Atlanta's AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves to the Calder Cup Championship last week and has won for league championships with the Wolves (IHL Turner Cup in 1997–98 and 1999–00; AHL Calder Cup in 2001–02 and 2007-08) as well as a Colonial League title with the Quad City Mallards in 1997, giving him five titles in 13 seasons as a head coach. Prior to becoming a coach the Toronto native enjoyed a 17-year pro career as a player that included 814 games in the NHL where he amassed 282 goals, 349 assists, and 631 points with Toronto, Quebec, and Hartford.

I spoke to GM Don Waddell about Anderson's hiring about what made him choose Anderson over other candidates and here's what he had to say:

"There's no doubt that we had a great pool of candidates to pick from and John brings a wealth of experience to the table and most importantly he's had great success at every level he has coached. He played 12 years in the National Hockey League and had a great pro career and now we've given him the opportunity to coach the Thrashers. I think it's a great move for our franchise and it puts our franchise in the position to take the next step."

Waddell also sees Anderson's hiring as a sign of maturity for the franchise as it draws from within to hire a coach.

"John's done everything we've asked him to do in the American League by not only winning championships but also by helping to develop some of our key young players," Waddell said. "We see that as a big benefit moving forward as he get a chance to coach some of the players he's had a hand in developing. He's going to get the opportunity to take those players to the next level."

Anderson has worked very closely with many of Atlanta's prospects and has done nothing but win in Chicago since the Wolves became the Thrashers' AHL affiliate. Anderson likes to play up-tempo hockey and wants his players to enjoy coming to the rink every day, whether it's for games or practice. His 800+ games of NHL experience will help him earn the respect of his players as he makes the jump from the AHL to the NHL. Click here for Anderson's playing and coaching stats. Players who played for the Thrashers  in 2007-08 and are under contract for next season who have played for Anderson include:

Garnet Exelby
Brad Larsen
Jordan LaVallee
Kari Lehtonen
Bryan Little
Ondrej Pavelec
Jim Slater
Brett Sterling
Colin Stuart
Boris Valabik

John Anderson will be at the draft tonight and will be in Atlanta next week.

**UPDATE**

I just finished speaking to John Anderson a little while ago and he's obviously excited about the job. He's been in pro hockey in one capacity or another for 30 years now and has been coaching for 13 seasons. It's been a long road for him to get back to the NHL and now that he's here he's finding it both overwhelming and exciting.

"When Don offered me the job last night it had been such a long time since I was in the National League that I went up to my room and cried," he said. "I couldn't
believe it and I was so excited. My family can't believe it either. They're so excited about going to Atlanta. I can't wait for the future now."

Coming from the Chicago Wolves is certainly going to make the transition easier for the veteran coach as he already has a strong working relationship with many of the players. In addition to all of the guys he's coached in Chicago he has seen many current Thrashers at training camp.

"I've been to the Thrashers training camp the last six years so I know most of the players that are with the Thrashers now, or I at least have a good idea of
them, so that will make the transition a lot easier. Plus working for the Thrashers the last six years I have a good relationship with the staff."

Fans will probably wonder what type of hockey they should expect to see in Blueland next season and they're in for a treat. The Wolves played an exciting offensive style in the AHL without sacrificing defense. Chicago scored the most goals in the AHL last season, beating their closest competitor in that department by 20 goals. They also scored 74 more goals than they gave up- tying them for the best GF/GA differential in the AHL.  They also scored almost a full goal per game more than they gave up in the Calder Cup playoffs.

"We like to play an attack type game," said Anderson this afternoon. "We don't like to sit back. I will tell you this though- we change our systems throughout a game sometimes and it takes a little while to get all of the sub-systems implemented. But because I've had some of the players already they know some of the thing we do so hopefully that transition will come easier. But it's going to be a lot of hard work in practice though, a lot of positioning and just understanding what I want as a coach."

Anderson will let Don Waddell and his staff put together the roster for next season and then he'll begin the process of teaching his systems to the entire team.

For those who are curious about what all of this means for the Wolves, they will have the final say in hiring their coach but the Thrashers will be consulted during the process. Don Waddell and Kevin Cheveldayoff (Chicago's GM) have a very close working relationship so don't expect there to be any conflicts there.

All this time and it is one of the first two guys they talked to how can Waddell keep his job this is insane
It is to bad I liked Anderson but some one will need to get in there so that Don has a new scape goat.

probably didn't have the signature on the contract yet and didn't want to have to retract if something unforeseen happened...that's all.

Posted by: Scott W on June 20, 2008 2:18PM EST
He certainly earned it. Great to see.

So what all is Don Lying about
1 A great pool of canidates only two guys would take the job if Don stayed
2This is not a promotion and Don did not develop thif club Anderson worked for the wolves never for the thrashers

Posted by: Anonymous on June 20, 2008 2:23PM EST
So this is the new puppet well good for Don Waddell he sure can save his own Butt. Now let's start operation save Don Waddell's job 08-09 it is going to be a great ride.

They finally hired him, this only tells me that DW already decided who Atlanta is going to draft and it is now set in stone. DW probably did not want to give Anderson time to change his mind...*boggle*

Betcha 10 bucks we get someone from Lithuania no one has ever heard of :P

Btw, I'm glad Anderson is getting a chance in Atlanta, let's just hope he doesn't screw it up like that other AHL coach we hired way back when.

Posted by: mitch on June 20, 2008 2:24PM EST
great now that Mr D has a coach he can work on re-building our D. Which he said he was doing for the last 9 years and then traded for the likes of Z. i hope this coach keeps our talent in town. however it was fun to see all the x thrashers playing for play off teams.

Posted by: donald on June 20, 2008 2:28PM EST
What about Brad McCrimmon? Is he gone?

The rest of the league will not view this as a positive move and continue to think of the Thrashers as an AHL club: not good.

Congratz to a great coach who will be missed in Chicago!!!

Posted by: Barry on June 20, 2008 2:31PM EST
I'm a huge Wolves fan and am sorry to see Mr. Anderson go, but wish him lots of luck unless the Thrashers play the Blackhawks.

Posted by: Thomas on June 20, 2008 2:55PM EST
Welcome to Atlanta Mr.Anderson! You have your work cut out for you, but no doubts here that you will succeed.....your professional record says alot.

Thanks for taking a chance on this team. Turning this team around will be a huge trophy for your resume.

Posted by: george on June 20, 2008 3:09PM EST
Welcome Mr. Anderson!! You will have it tough with the fans here so I hope you can prove a lot of the negative people wrong.
Holly G was wrong! WOW!!!!

Posted by: Claire on June 20, 2008 3:20PM EST
I am so pleased with this choice! He works so well with rookies and young players and that is what we need with so many already on the team. I see a playoff run this year. (At least a second round.)

Posted by: Sam Roney on June 20, 2008 3:30PM EST
Good! I figure this year's Chicago Wolves could
beat the Thrashers in a 7 game series. Maybe he
could just swap the teams, and bring in his Wolves to Atlanta if they want to win some games.

Posted by: mal on June 20, 2008 3:30PM EST
dude i'm telling you, we should of hired john tortorella right after tampa bay fired him.

Posted by: Paminski on June 20, 2008 3:31PM EST
I didn't realize until just now I've been holding my breath since last October.

Posted by: Rob in Columbus on June 20, 2008 3:35PM EST
Excellent choice. Anderson would have accepted to job long ago if not for this current team of Wolves. The man loves his team, what can you say? He didn't want to leave the Wolves until they won the championship. God Bless the man, they won and... now so did he. Welcome back to the game Mr. Anderson. Long time no see.

Posted by: Andrew on June 20, 2008 3:40PM EST
Awesome choice, Don!

Oh yeah, and I'm breathing a sigh of relief that this blog wasn't titled "John Tortorella Hired as Head Coach".

Posted by: Nancy on June 20, 2008 3:57PM EST
Congratulations to John Anderson! We will surely miss you here in Chicago and I am sure the team will also. I am looking forward to seeing the Thrashers play when we go to visit our family.

Wow, 2 positive things DW has done this week. Sign Moose, and Hire Anderson! Maybe Don's turning a new leaf.

One can only hope....

Posted by: Paula on June 20, 2008 4:07PM EST
Congrats John Anderson. Long time coming. You will be greatly missed here in Chicago, but thanks for going out with a bang!!!!! Good luck.

I am a Blackhawk fan. I am not a Chicago AHL fan (Rockford, Hawks AHL affiliate) but live in Chicago and seen many games on TV. That being said, the Thrashers have made a great choice on John Anderson as coach. The players will respond for him, especially the younger ones. And his style of hockey is very fan friendly.
In time the only thing you will question about this move is why did they wait so long to get him.

Posted by: Anonymous on June 20, 2008 4:56PM EST
So much for the inside track on the courtesy interview Holly. What is your take on the hire now?

Good luck Anderson. Here's hoping you can raise Atlanta's game as well as your game to the NHL.

Posted by: Michael on June 20, 2008 4:57PM EST
Well!!!! Now that we have a coach, we need a good defense. Hopefully Don can use our good draft picks to actually do some good.

Posted by: Sam on June 20, 2008 4:58PM EST
Good to have a coach and start moving forward.

Plus, all the whining about not having a coach by draft day can stop now. : )

Posted by: Cliff Simmons on June 20, 2008 5:00PM EST
Welcome Coach Anderson. We're with you ...

Posted by: Jim on June 20, 2008 5:07PM EST
Wait signing moose was a good move?
44th in the NHL in GAA almost 4 a game and he faced ony 28.5 per game and Kari faced 32.5 per game and he is 42nd in the NHL save % this guy sucks and we get to here two or more years of how we have two starting goalies crap.
And that means that a good goalie prospect will have to stay in the minors for years or Kari will have to be traded no on else will take Moose in a trade.

Posted by: Hunger on June 20, 2008 5:18PM EST
I'm thrilled with this decision. Although it should have taken place after the 6th game of the season I'm glad Waddell made the right choice instead of going w/ his team USA bias and going with Torts or Sullivan. I believe again.

Jim: I agree that signing Hedberg was a terrible move. Rhodes had a better GAA in 00-01 when we were a brand new team... I'm confident that Hedberg is currently the least talented goalie in the NHL. He may have great work ethic, but that doesn't get you everywhere. It's been said that Pavalec has an amazing work ethic as well, except he's proven that he has some talent.... I'm hoping that this is a sign-and-trade for a 5th round pick or something....!

Posted by: Kevin on June 20, 2008 6:13PM EST
It should be interesting. He will prolly do a good job. It's funny though, Most of all the negative comments come from people that are "Anonymous". Nice, your opinions suck too! As for the above comments, I think you are way off base, or baseless! Which is it? He was by far, the best we had in net last year. And fairly stable. ' Least talented goalie in the NHL?' Doubt it. The numbers don't tell the whole story do they, or did you just want to make another lame post? Just another comment from somebody that really doesn't know what they are talking about. We have alot of these people in Atlanta now? Must be Yankeees!

Posted by: Kirk on June 20, 2008 6:36PM EST
Anderson's the man. I hope Don drafts a big, young, good skating defenseman (like Coburn) and a center to feed Kovy (like Savard).

Posted by: sydney on June 20, 2008 9:22PM EST
they should have hired John Paris ( knights head coach) ...since Anderson is head coach bring Paris in as assit.coach..... I'm telling you, Atlanta will see the CUP then!

Posted by: Frank on June 20, 2008 10:23PM EST
Anderson will do well but he'd better not focus on offense because he's not going anywhere in this league. Our goalies are not the problem. And it takes time to "season"a great goalie anyway. Forget the GAA stats. Thrasher backchecking is plainly irresponsible and that is problem #2.

Problem #1 is simply defense. It can't dig the puck out the corners. Won't take the body out. No crisp break-out pass other than getting rid of the puck or icing it. Our Goalies face just too many shots & get little help on rebounds. We need at least 2 more good defensemen. Thrashers can't play .500 hockey no matter who the Goalie is, if he has to face 35-45 shots every game. He'll win a few but in the long run, you get 2007-2008 all over again and that sucks.

Posted by: caine on June 20, 2008 11:10PM EST
I am glad to see so many people from Chicago posting here. You know it says a lot when a whole city cares enough about the guy to post congrats on here. I say it's a new season, a new coach, and the faithful are waiting.

I just want to say welcome john, give us a show this year. Win, lose, or draw we are all behind this team here in the ATL. So bring on the ice, the beer, and lets kick some a**!

I hope the Thrashers new head coach does very well. I live in Maplewood New Jersey but I am not a Devils fan and I hope this move helps ATL win the stanley cup.

Just a personal note to John , Karen and the kids: all of your old friends on Chapman Drive are thrilled and we wish you only the best. It is about damn time!

Congratulations Mr. Anderson!! I've been a season ticket holder for the last 11 years for the Wolves. It's been a pleasure watching him coach the Wolves all those years. We will miss him a lot on the bench. We wish him all the best in the world with the Thrashers. With his style and personality, he will bring the Stanley Cup to Atlanta.

QC Mallards lost a great coach to the Wolves & now the Wolves losing him to Atlanta--bet you Atlanta fans don't realize how many fans your going to gain along w/coach Anderson. He has a very loyal following in the QC & Chicago--couldn't be happier for him & his family--congratulations Coach Anderson form this QC Mallards fan.

Finally! Congrats to Coach Anderson. Welcome to Atlanta. Wish it could have been last October, but we'll take it! Can't wait till the puck drops.

Posted by: Anonymous on June 23, 2008 9:26AM EST
I think Waddell made a HUGE mistake by not choosing McCrimmon - depending upon contractual obligations - we will see Brad behind the bench as Head Coach in another city! Good luck Brad.

Posted by: Dan D. on June 23, 2008 11:09AM EST
Brad McCrimmon should have gotten the head coaching job here in ATL, he derserved it. We will see him as a head coach in the NHL and we will be sorry. As far as Hedberg goes ya'll need to stop being negative about him he is a good goalie and I would not trade him. For you who feel that Damian Rhodes was a better goalie you need to get your eyes and ears checked. He played ATL like a fool. He claimed to be injured most of the time but he knew he just down right sucked. I will be there to see if Anderson is as good as his stats show and I hope I am proven wrong about him but Brad deserved that job.

Posted by: Vicky on June 23, 2008 7:30PM EST

Watching his cool demeanor at all those Wolves games was a pleasure. It will be sad to see him go and I hope the Wolves get someone just as great as he was.

Posted by: Steve Esser - Chicago on June 25, 2008 4:05PM EST
I knew John when he was a Hartford Whaler, he played the game right then and has coached the Wolves with equal passion. We wish him well, the Thrasher fans will come to know his passion and love his up tempo style of offensive play. For the past decade he was clearly the best hockey coach at any level in Chicago. Best wishes to him and to the Thrashers.
Go Wolves!

Posted by: sydney on June 26, 2008 10:41PM EST
The person that really deserved that job, was John Paris Jr (former Atlanta Knights Coach) who bought the IHL Turner Cup home to us. The man makes magic happen on the ice. He can turn a team around so fast it's amazing. He's win lost record are among the best of the best. Well, what do you expect from a Bowman's boy. Scotty Bowman saw quality when picking him. And if you watch the teams he has coached you'd see that Bowman Style. Paris make's hockey exciting and wished to have him back here in Atlanta. I have nothing against Mr. Anderson and wish him the best. But, if Mr. Anderson and Mr. Waddell (Plus owners) want icing on the cake, they should hired Mr. Paris as well. Come on Mr. Waddell and Owners, bring him on and turn up the heat in Atlanta. Lets rock our city again!!!

Posted by: Marty on June 28, 2008 3:48PM EST
Excellent decision in Anderson!... As far as I'm concerned all the critics and pessimist can turn in their tickets if they want. We don't need any more "boo" birds at the rink... we need "Blue" birds coming to cheer for our team in "Blue"Land. Sure would be nice if we could make an offer to get "Du" back from the Pens as well.

Posted by: Pat Julian on July 1, 2008 7:58AM EST
Well, from what I had just read, John Anderson hopefully will do some good for the Thrashers, since he's won some Turner Cups with the Atlanta Thrashers' affiliate Chicago Wolves, so let's hope that he will win a Stanley Cup for the Thrashers. I certainly would love that, since I'm a fan both, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Atlanta Thrashers.
GO THRASHERS!

Posted by: Rob V on July 9, 2008 3:49PM EST
It was a sad but happy day in chicago when it was heard that John Anderson was leaving. He has deserved this oppertunity for so long and it's a shame it took this long to happen. He has proven as a player and coach that he is a winner. I wish you the best John, thanks for the memories and all the cups. Hopefully you'll be there when they raise the banners on opening night. Go Wolves!!!!

Posted by: t luzzo on July 11, 2008 11:02AM EST
What a great coach atlanta is getting. he works well with the young players and now you should have a system that will work well at both the minor and major leagues. I think in the past the success of the wolves was johns and the failure of atlanta was not being on the same page of the minor league team. I believe once the players went to the thrashers they wre tought a new system which made the transition much harder. now you will have both systems in place with the wolves and thrashers. good luck john. chicago and the wolves will miss you. THANKS FOR ALL THE CHAMPIONS!
