Jersey Numbers
Posted by: Ben Wright on August 15, 2007 at 12:55PM EST
If you take a quick look at the Thrashers' roster page you'll notice that three of this summer's acquisitions have selected jersey numbers.

Todd White wore #28 in Ottawa and Minnesota but since it's already being worn by Nic Havelid he's opting to wear #12 which was also worn by former Thrashers Peter Bondra, Bill Lindsay,  Tony Hrkac, Steve Guolla and Shean Donovan.

Ken Klee wore #2 in Washington, #22 in Toronto, #8 in New Jersey and #2 in Colorado. He'll don #22 here in Atlanta. Other Thrashers to wear #22- Shean Donovan (again), Frankie Lessard, Kamil Piros and Eric Bertrand.

Chris Thorburn must have picked after Klee (who has NHL seniority) because he wore #22 in Pittsburgh but is switching to #27, made famous by Patrik Stefan, Denny Lambert and Bob Corkum. Lambert had 434 PIM in two seasons in Atlanta, so Thorburn is in good company there.

**UPDATE**

I was just told that Eric Perrin has laid claim to #11, formerly worn by JP Vigier (who signed with a Swiss team for 2007-08) and Dean Sylvester.

**UPDATE #2**

Karel Pilar will wear #39, as did Mark Popovic, Kip Brennan, J.L. Gran-Pierre and Petr Svartvadet before him.  Mark Popovic wore #6 last season when he was called up and will presumably keep it this season.

By the way- don't assume that Pilar will start the season in Chicago. He had a promising future before his heart ailment sidelined him for large parts of the last two seasons. now that he's been cleared to play he'll be doing everything he can to regain that form, and it's not a stretch to think he'll make the team out of camp.

hey ben, you should do a story on the former Thrashers, kinda like a were are they now, i think you've done 1 in the past, but it's been a while.
thanks.

There will be one about a former Atlanta Flame in the near future.

former thrashers are a possibility too.

i am sorry for the bad language but i heard a rumor about us trading hossa to either the sharks or canucks. WHAT THE F***. then wadell released a statement saying he isnt on the trading block...atleast not yet (whats that supposed to mean dw)

Posted by: Ben Wright on August 10, 2007 9:58AM EST
It means he's not on the trading block and Waddell has no intention of putting him on it.

Posted by: roh on August 10, 2007 10:23AM EST
you forgot Eric Belanger who wore #22!!! :) Right?

Posted by: bob on August 10, 2007 1:24PM EST
Who wore # 33 ?

Posted by: Kane on August 10, 2007 2:01PM EST
So what happened with Sutton? Is he coming back or have we moved on?

Posted by: Ben Wright on August 10, 2007 2:57PM EST
Given that anything can happen in the NHL you can't really say Sutton is finished in Atlanta until he signs with another team, but given that we have Zhitnik, Havelid, Exelby, Klee, McCarthy, Pilar, Enstrom, Popovic, Lewis, Valabik and Denny under contract it's not likely that there's room for him. Some of those contracts are two-way, and odds are only one or two rookies will play on the blueline.

And yes- Belanger wore #22. And Denis Hamel wore 12. In my haste I only checked the media guide career number registry which obviously didn't have the numbers guys wore this past season. Oops.

Posted by: brandon on August 11, 2007 4:03PM EST
im a goalie for one of the junior teams here and from what ive seen i think that pavelec needs to atleast be backup to lehtonen now.

he has to much talent and potential to be sitting in the minors..and btw i like sterling over dupuis, but i kno thats only me

Posted by: brandon on August 11, 2007 4:07PM EST
make that the *juniors* team

Posted by: dev on August 11, 2007 4:51PM EST
i hope enstrom and little play. not to impressed with sterling but thats just me....is boris valabik (sp) gonna make the roster he is a beast kinda andy sutton like but more talented

Posted by: brandon on August 11, 2007 6:05PM EST
enstrom should make it easily but u have to be impressed with sterling having 50+ goals last yr..he seems to be definitely over little by a long shot though

Posted by: dev on August 11, 2007 11:06PM EST
if enstrom plays i am def buying his jersey.....i would love to see saavard back

what do you think now?

Posted by: dev on August 12, 2007 1:56PM EST
i feel bad for johan hedberg if we play pavalec infront of him i think he deserves to go to' another team cause he is a great back up who has always stepped up when needed. with pavalec being so young and good we have to play him up there.....but honestly how old do you think pavelec will be until he starts cause kari is young.....does anyonee think they will battle it out for starter in the future

Posted by: Jared on August 12, 2007 4:00PM EST
in the future pavalec will battle Kari, but hes still got at least 1 year in chicago before he even gets his first game much less a start

Posted by: dev on August 12, 2007 4:22PM EST
imagine the future goalie situation for atl...having such great goalies might cause us to do one of those goalie rotation things or whoever isnt starting will get angry and we will have to get rid of them as in trade them....cause pavalec and kari in the future will be so good none of them will be back up material they will be starting material

Posted by: sar on August 13, 2007 1:53AM EST
Maybe be could trade a goalie for a speedy center for Kovy??

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 13, 2007 1:47PM EST
Great idea we could get a guy like mathew lombardi
or any1 else

Posted by: Anonymous on August 13, 2007 4:53PM EST
i wouldnt want to trade kari or pavalec...

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 13, 2007 4:55PM EST
I would love too see savard back or bergeron or mike cammeleri who has a unstable future in LA and would be excellent with kovy

Posted by: dev on August 13, 2007 6:47PM EST
SAVARD

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 13, 2007 9:35PM EST
trade hedberg for cammeleri: it would be good for both teams because LA has no good goalies and atlanta needs another good center and we could have a stanley cup contender

Why is the thrashers website so antiseptic? If the website markets itself as "all things Thrasher", then why do we have to go elsewhere to find out where our players have gone? It would be nice if they told us ALL the news, both good and not so good. We seem to treat our old players as ghosts. There's never an "attaboy" for Vigier, Sutton, Savard, Nerminen, Tkachuk, Sims, Metropolit, and on and on. At some point Waddell must have had enough confidence in these guys to hire them. Very frustrating.

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 14, 2007 10:39AM EST
You're very right we should have more information about other things tthan the thrashers and specially about the oldthrashers. I was so frustrated when there was nothing about sutton going to NY. And I had wish that sutton stayed:-(

Posted by: Sour on August 14, 2007 11:02AM EST
Any chance of gettin Odgie out of the booth an back in a jersey? Im a little worried about all the skill guys we have with nobody to look after em. With only Boulton, Thorburn, an Exelby in the regular lineup, its a little frustratin.

Id like to see G. Desbiens an B. Valabik an J. LaVallee make the big club, any chance for any of them?

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 15, 2007 12:50AM EST
We'll see after pre-season!

Posted by: Suzanne on August 15, 2007 1:37PM EST
I'm disappointed that I did not know about JP signing somewhere else until I noticed he wasn't listed on the roster and then read about it on the message boards.

Posted by: JAmes_kovyboy on August 15, 2007 2:34PM EST
Heres the top UFA centers we should get:
-peca
-bulis
-metropolit
-stefan
-oneill
-turgeon

What do u think guys?

*DEPTH CHART UPDATE 3*

Kozlov-White-Hossa
Kovy-Slater-Sterling
Perrin-Holik-Dupuis
Larsen-Ruchin-Boulton

Back:Haydar-Thorburn-Bartovic

Havelid-Zhitnik
Exelby-Popovic
Klee-Ernstrom

Lethonen
Pavelec

Back:Hedberg

I dont like seeing hedberg in the minors so I hope he gets traded even though he is a great guy with unbeliveble talent. You maybe noticed slater on the second line, well thats because he is a super speedy guy and should keep up with kovy. But the greatest thing would be to get cammalleri for hedberg or a guy like gilbert brule from columbus if you dont know him go to

http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=4379&hubname=nhl-blue_jackets

and look at his scouting report

Posted by: Anonymous on August 15, 2007 11:54PM EST
Why in God's name would you want Stefan or Metro back?

Posted by: Buddy Hammett on August 16, 2007 7:29AM EST
Four words: White - Perrin - Holik - Slater.

As for why we don't post news about were former Thrashers sign- it's simply not done in any pro sorts that I'm aware of. go to other NHL sites. Go to NBA or NFL sites. None of them post news about departing players unless they've been traded. It's just not how it works.

Posted by: Anonymous on August 16, 2007 2:57PM EST
I don't know about the NBA or NFL, but Major League Baseball does an exceptional job of keeping up with former players. Whether a player goes to a different team because of a trade or free agent signing or whatever, MLB team sites report on it. And when a player is part of a 'human interest' story, that gets reported as well. Team sites will report on a variety of things: a former team member's injury, family member illness, continued charitable work, etc. Maybe it's just different for baseball, but I get more of a "family" feel to their websites...the feeling that players may move on, but they will always be of interest to the organization because they were once part of it and brought something to it. I have followed baseball for over twenty years and I never have to scour website after website to try to find out where players have moved to. It's reported very quickly on MLB.com, as well as on the websites of the team the player left and the team the player is joining. I guess maybe the environment is different for baseball...playing 162 games together and playing almost daily might lend itself to organizations staying more in touch with their players once they move on...

Too bad ATL has nothing to offer L.A., Johan Hedberg for Mike Cammalleri??.. Thats almost the funniest thing I've ever heard. I bet Dean Lombardi wants to trade an 80 point scorer with upside for a backup goaltender, because the Kings don't have enough average tenders.

Mr. Gary Winnick and his cronies might just as well have broken into their homes and looted their belongings. And many of the 9,000 Global Crossing employees who lost their jobs have said that promised severance payments never materialized and health benefits were abruptly cut off.
