Hainsey A Strong Start For Thrashers

In past years the trend was for the Thrashers to sign veterans via free
agency, relying on players 30 and older to come in and supplement existing
youth.
That changed today with the signing of 27-year-old Ron Hainsey (6' 3", 210 lbs) whose best
years should still be ahead of him. The Connecticut native blossomed in the last two seasons
while playing under defensively-minded coach Ken Hitchcock in Columbus. The
smooth skater put up nine goals and 34 points two seasons ago and eight goals
and 32 assists this past season. All eight of his goals came on the power play,
but don't expect that to be a concern here in Atlanta where the eight defensmen
who saw action in more than 10 games apiece scored a combined 13 goals.
"We didn't get a lot of points from our defensemen last year" said Don
Waddell. "We're looking to try to add some defensemen that have offensive
instincts to contribute to our goal scoring."
Mission accomplished. Waddell sees Hainsey's greatest assets as his skating
and his puck-carrying ability. Earlier this week head coach John Anderson said
that he gives all of his defensemen the green light to jump into the play when
they see a potential scoring opportunity. If Hainsey could score eight and nine
goals under Hitchcock's defensive system he'll certainly get the chance to score
more than that under Anderson.
Hainsey's passing ability will also be a welcome addition to a team that
struggled to get the puck to the forwards. As Waddell pointed out today, the
more time you spend attacking the less time you spend in your own zone. Hainsey
has the ability to make crisp outlet passes to the forwards and that's the first
step to gaining the zone. He won't be a cure-all for the Thrashers but he should
be a valuable addition at a reasonable price relative to the deals that were
signed on Tuesday. Few teams are earning praise for the contracts they signed on
the first day of free agency when upwards of $300 million was given out to
players and at the moment the Hainsey contract looks like a reasonable one,
especially if he continues to improve as expected.
As Don Waddell said, "We think his upside is still in front of him. He's had
two very strong years in Columbus and each year he continues to get better. He's
still got room to grow and he will continue to get even better."
As for where he'll fit on this team, that will be up to John Anderson
and his staff. Waddell pointed out that your top two defensemen don't always
play together because often it makes more sense to split them up to give your
team two good pairs. Waddell did say that he expects Hainsey to fit on one of
those pairs though.
"You always want to have a strong top four and with Enstrom and Havelid and
Ron now and the other guys that we've got I think we can find a good top four
guys and then still have a good five and six."
Don't take that to mean that Waddell is finished shopping though. When asked
if he is still speaking to players and agents he said that the team is in talks
with several players and that the trade route is another very realistic option
for improving the team, especially as some teams are getting themselves into cap
trouble by signing players to big contracts. With five NHL defensemen now under
contract as well as third overall pick Zach Bogosian and farmhands like Boris
Valabik ready to fight for spots in camp it's entirely possible that a
defenseman could be shopped.
On top of that, Waddell hasn't ruled out bringing in more blueline help.
"If we can continue to add both defensemen and forwards we'll continue to do
so to strengthen our club."
The signing of Hainsey is a good start to the Thrashers' off-season
acquisitions and based on Waddell's comments that what it was- a start.

i like this pick up but it is a bit overpayed but i can live with it. Huselies is gone that sucks. I think to strengnthen our team it will have to be done through trades now. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242326&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main Boyle trade rumors. I really would love him but the fact that they are in our division will probably hinder our chanses. Hossa gets thrown around clubs like crazy now. I would love a trade for a big name player if it doesnt involve Bogosian, enstrom, Hainsey, Pavelec, or kovy. Please no more tod whites DW bring one more big D or C and then decent players not TOD WHITES.

i dont see this as over paid at all, this kid has good upside at only 27 years old.he adds size and will play alot of minutes on team that had a poor defense last year.great pick up.

Kovy17, you're not going to be able to trade for a "big name" player if you're trying to hold on to all of your valuable assets (I noticed that Kari isn't in your list but he's not going anywhere, either).
If we make a trade, it'll be for a "good" player but don't expect "big names" unless you're willing to give something up.

Scott-
Miss Gunning over at the Thrashers Prospects Annex (she covers Thrashers prospects at Hockey's Future and has a supplemental blog on the side) seems to think that Esposito will return to juniors for 08-09, with which I have to agree, especially since the new Montreal team traded the farm for him very recently. He cant play in the AHL yet; hes too young. So if he doesnt make the NHL right outta training camp this fall, he'll be back in junior. And I think it was Ben who reminded me of the fact that prospects like Esposito (age-wise) only have 10 games they can play in the NHL in their would-be rookie season or their contract counts against the team max and it effects his contract. Remember Lucic for the Bruins? Around his seventh game or so everyone was wondering if he would stay in the NHL or go back to junior before his 9th or 10th game because it would void his junior eligibility.

I agree Hainsey is a really good pickup for the Trash, and we did overpay, but I'm alright with that. I think our odds of a major star pickup are slim and none. We are going to have to build the team more organically. I'm encouraged the DW changed his approach and didn't overpay for someone like Holik. Maybe, just maybe we're finally turning a new leaf and will be a formidable opponent in the SE division.

"formidable opponent in the SE division"
Unfortunately i dont think so. I dont know how its going to be possible to go to games this year. I remember my first Thrashers game, Hossa, Savard, Kovalchuk, Kari came back, de Vries, Modry, Petrovichy, Holik still had something in him. Maybe not the best team, but definatly a fun one to watch. Now, we have kovalchuk and a bunch of nobodies, unfortynately, this season ended before it even began.

We should sign Richard Park just to boost ticket sales. With the third largest Korean population in the US (after NYC and LA), we should be able to fill some more seats in Philips from the Chamblee/Doraville/Norcross/Duluth area. Sportsnet.ca has him listed as only $475k, so he wouldn't cost that much either.

Michael -Don't rush to judgement. You haven't seen these players play in the new system yet. I don't expect we'll be seeing the same brand of hockey as last year. For most of the year we had one D-man who was able to skate the puck out of our own zone - Toby. Now it looks like we will have at least 3 - Toby, Hainsey, and Bogisian. I can't tell you how many times I was frustrated with our inability to clear the puck which ultimately lead to an opponents goal. I think the offensive tempo will be more upbeat and we'll see more goals go in for us, or at least more shots taken. You don't have to have a bunch of stars to play exciting hockey and win. You need capable guys and an effective system. Anderson's system was pretty effective in Chicago and we have a bunch of capable guys, although many are still young and gaining confidence. If you choose to stay away from Blueland at the beginning of the season I'll bet you're back before Christmas cheering on these "nobodies".

We need to re-sign Boults. If that's not the plan, pick up Laraque and give LaVallee a chance at LW. I'd also like to see Colin Stuart in the uniform again. And I'm dreaming here, but Satan would be brilliant and help bring Kozzy's game back.

S CUP-
Ill come to cheer for Kovy and Kari and Kozzy and Toby, aparently they are once again going to pull the team on their shoulders while we will talk about the nobodies as "heartless" "unskilled" and "uncaring"
Bogosian might not even play this year

Michael:
Glad to hear you're coming back to Blueland. We have alot more than those guys you mentioned but yes they will shoulder alot of the load. I hope you find it in your heart to cheer for the rest of the team too. You ought to go watch practice this fall and watch and get to know some of the other players. Stuart, Thorburn, Armstrong and Christenson are talented guys and they are far from heartless. Personally I think Stuart and Thorburn will surpass everyone's expectations this season. And Crusher and Army will come into their own too. And you can throw Perrin in as a fun guy to watch play too...he has grit and heart as evidenced by his play on the penalty kill.
I don't want to sound too much like a cheerleader but I see alot of potential in the younger guys and I think we have the coach that can help them realize it to the fullest. And I hope he can get some of the vets to flourish too. We need Slava to be productive, Kovy to be happy, and Kari to be dominant (and healthy).
Let's see who's on the roster come the beginning of October and then we can pick this discussion back up. There still can be some FA signings and a possible trade to add some pieces to our puzzle.

Signing Hainsey is a step in the right direction, however we still need a big, hard-hitting, defensive defenseman, and Boris Valabik is NOT it. The market is limited with these types, however, Jason Smith, Paul Mara, or Marek Malik could do the trick. Also, as we all know Kovy needs another 1st line center and/or winger. Guys like Markus Naslund, Jaromir Jagr, Brenden Shanahan, Martin Straka, and Miroslav Satan are still out there. Yes, they are expensive, but, all are proven and will provide leadership. And, there is not as much size and grit in the 3rd and 4th lines right now either. I see Slater, LaVallee, and Stuart as possible mainstays back there, but signing a guy like Georges Laraque, Martin Lapointe, Chris Gratton, or Kevyn Adams would be a great asset to our lineup on and off the ice. The Thrashers must get a big, defensive defenseman and goal scorer if we want to be successful.

True, only time will tell, but as of now, I dont see us in the hunt for the cup, im sorry but i even think that playoffs from now is a longshot. This is my opinion. Course this dosent mean i wont be comming back to Blueland, I cheer for us no matter what.

Satan is off the market as well now...
|
|
Posted by: Steve on July 3, 2008 3:40PM EST
Yeah, Satan is gone and so is Fedotenko.
Asher, I think that Gratton and Lapointe have been resigned; Laraque, I don't know if we would get him or if he would play here. I really don't think Shanahan would come here nor should we really get him. He is more of what we have already had; veterans who are not mobile, and are struggling to play. Even commentators were saying as much as Shanahan is a leader, he is not as effective as he once was. If we were going to have someone like that, we should just keep Recchi. Shanahan and Recchi both scored about the same.
Aucoin from Carolina is gone too for a center. I say Pavol Demitra, Fedorov, Michael Peca, Vasicek, or Robitaille are the remaining centers. Straka has been resigned, and is no longer available. What about Stu Barnes?
On defense, I told you all about Boyle; management wants him to waive his no trade clause, and want to get rid of him. Boyle is thinking it over. Look on the TSN website; the whole story is there. I don't think that we should wait on him, but we should keep our options open for him. But in the meantime, Montador, Mara, Malik, Brisebois, or Carney for Minn. would be who I would go for. Montador is the cheapest, and had the most points of all, but we can afford the others.
But, we better hurry and make a move or they are going to be gone.

You remember for elementary school field trips how you had to get a permission slip signed by your parents to go? Every now and then, there was some unfortunate kid who forgot to get his permission slip signed and had to sit and watch everyone else get on the bus to go somewhere fun... I feel like we're that kid, sitting in the back of the classroom watching all of the other kids ride away on the UFA bus while we have to work on extra penmanship assignments.
Is DW waiting for his parents to sign his UFA permission slip or something? What are we waiting for?

Tampa will only trade Boyle to Atlanta for a goalie Hand something else. Hainsey isn't just the begging but the midle and end too of major free agent signings This team must be amazing if a great GM like Don Waddell dosn't need to sign any more pieces. Stanly Cup here we come.

I really hope DW wakes up. Guys are dropping like flys. Steve, your probably right about Shanahan and frankly Jagr to. I agree, we should just resign Recchi as a 2nd line/leader winger. Montador has put up decent numbers, but I think at this point we need that big, hard-hitting d-man and he is just to small. We must hurry on a Malik, Mara, Smith guy. One center still out there is Ladislav Nagy. A center who put up 60 plus points for a struggling Kings team. We could get him at a good price as well. As a huge fan of Dan Boyle I think he is a great asset to any team and would love to have him here, but Tampa will never give him to us. Does anyone have any direction as to who DW is going after?

Center: Trade for Marleau or Sign Morrison or Fedorov or Demitra; One of these moves could make us a real SCup contender and second options could be Jason Williams, Josef Vasicek, Randy Robitaille and Mike Peca
Winger: Demitra, Shanahan, Jeff Hamilton, Rucinsky, Brylin, Stumpel, Bochenski or Marcel Hossa
D: Try get back F. Kaberle http://thrashers.portspaces.com/post/blueland/hainsey_a_strong_start_for_thrashers.html#comments , Boyle or Malik, Mara, Berard r someone like that...But we can be complete on D if Bogosian makes the team

there must be a trade in the works for the thrashers? that or 1 more big signing?
|
|
Posted by: Chuck on July 3, 2008 8:03PM EST
Wait you want to use Moose and Pavelic as the thrashers goalies Moose who was 44th last year out of 44 goalies in GAA at 3.46 and he faced on average 4 less shots on goal per game than Kari. He also was 42nd out of 44 in Save % with .892 while Kari was 15th out of 44 with .916 so if you do not know save % is everthing the higher the better the lower the more you should be spending time in the minors. So lets put this in to prespective if Hedberg had faced the same number of shots on goal Kari did he would have given up 37 more goals last season than Kari did And if the defense had helped out Kari a little he would have allowed 24 less then good old moose. Hedberg is a poor goalie he the only guy who llikes him is Darred Eliot and they must play golf together or something Clearly Waddell felt like the price on goalies would be high this season and he knew what he had with moose and Pavelic was not ready if Kari went down but I can not believe that Don would be so stupid as to trade away Kari and start with moose. Give Don a little credit
|
|
Posted by: Peter on July 3, 2008 8:13PM EST
Pavelic has to many question marks the last time the thrashers roled the dice with a goalie who had only a good half season to his name and that was it they had to play Damion Rhodes and Defoe Don won't make this mistake again and have no goalie right or wrong Kari is the goalie for now and the next three or four years and he deserves to have at least a fair defense and center in front of him

With the Hainsey signing, I feel better that I did a couple of days ago.
I'm looking forward to the upcomming season. You won't have the Hossa contract stuff this year, the players most likely be tuning out the coach, and they did get rid of some deadweight this time around.
We don't know if the overall recors will be better or worse, but we will see kids like Boris, Little and young vets like Colby and EC getting a chance for some real ice time which should make for a positive training camp from a fans perspective. Thank god they didn't get somebody mediocre in ths UFA period like the last 2 summers.

Waddell has got to go. He cant sell a vision to players with pockets full of money. We are in the same poorly managed posision as last year. Again this year we will be staffing our team with 3rd and 4th liners. We probably have 5th line guys. 17 has got to be counting the days down on this sentence here in hockey prision. We may be small but at least we are slow, and not fundamentally sound. Not a good combo. Other than Kolvolchuck? Name one lagit first or second line player we have. You cant do it, offence or defence. Waddell is a Joke, he has got to go!

Day 3 and only 1 signing. To me its looking like we might be looking at a youthful team this year. I would love to see that, but at the same time, we need a quality 1st line centerman. Thats where you sign Brendan Morrison. He played with Naslund in his prime and could be as good with Kovy.
Who knows. I don't see us getting anymore D. Defiantly no goalies. All I can see it perhaps a center or winger.

2 Things
1st: I no that Jagr is old and very very close to retirment in the next couple of years but why not throw and offer his way. Maybe a 1 year deal at around 7.5 mil. We have the money and he can still play and I think non hockey fans can at least cling to that name ( Hey it may bring in a few more fans) And with all the young guys with a shot next year it may be good especially if we can bring Reechi back for maybe 1 more year to let our young players mature.
2nd: I have been reading all the talk about how DW does not do a good job and I will admit there are some times where he drive me up the wall, and I also always here about how nobody want to play in ATL or for the organization. We have to remmeber that we are a young organization still in the whole spectrum. Take Edmonton for an example on all the sites you read about them being the front runner for almost all big name free agent but they can not land a single one and that organization has been around much much longer. I think we will learn from our pre-lock out mistakes and it will turn around
I will proablly get hell for these statements but if you disagree give me good a good agreement and I will be happy to agree or at least see your point.
And a good agrument is not Fire DW

You wont catch hell from me because you are taking the posision of an 8 year old girl. And well how can you be mean to little girls. When we finish at the bottom again this year you and your sisters will just accept that the guys in the blue sure are cute. Befor long there will be talk of the team moving because no one goes to the games anymore. Watching minor league hockey at major league prices wont fly another season.

First, James Kovyboy, If you read my posting a few days ago, Marleau is not going anywhere. In the San Jose Mercury News, he was quoted last Sunday as saying that he is staying.
Nikulin would be great to get; so let's get him. Maybe that is why we are not going for another defenseman, but no centers? Why have we not signed one? Or maybe another RW?
About the team moving, they are not moving next season; when it happens, it will happen if it goes through.

Chris - that's a story made up by the writer palying what if. The Thrash aren't going anywhere as long as ASG are the owners. Typical sports talking (or writing) heads - the create nothing in this world - so they have to fabricate to start a "buzz" to act as if they have a place of importance in this world. They need to try a real job.

For everyone who does not know about Ilja Nikulin, he is a big, hard-nosed defensive defenseman. Not going to impress with skills or points, but plays position well, hits hard and is responsible in his own end. We drafted him way back in 2000 in the second round and he would have gone much earlier, but it was widely known he wanted to stay in Russia. Now he wants to come over and we should welcome him with open arms! Now we need a center for Kovy and were almost there.

The way I see since the Thrashers currently don't have anyone to fill the captain role wouldn't it be smart for us to resign Mark Recchi? I think we should resign Recchi to a two year deal and make him our captain. He has already said that he would like to continue playing here and loves Atlanta and that the Thrashers would be his number one choice if DW gave him the oppurtunity. So what do yall think about that?
|
|
Posted by: The Other J.B. on July 4, 2008 6:48AM EST
Recchi has made it abundantly clear he is not signing here again. He went so far as to say he wants to play for a team that has a chance and doesn't want to play for a bad team ever again. Ungrateful old b*stard. I really liked him when he came down here too...wonder what happened.
Dan Boyle's sticking point is he's very happy set up family & lifestyle-wise in Tampa Bay. I'd say if the Thrashers are in the mix, we've got a pretty good shot at him since you can fly to TB in like 1-1.5 hours.
As far as forwards go, Demitra, Morrison, Federov would all be alright with me, not ideal but would certainly suffice if only to teach some upcoming wolves a thing or two...

Also a rumor on ESPN and TSN that Jagr has accepted a deal to play in Russia

Ilya Nikulin is a great pickup, young(26) and a big defensive stay at home defender. These two pickups (Hainsey) alone will greatly improve the Thrashers D. I'm not counting on Bogs, but either way the Thrash has improved its D. Now lets get a little help for Kovy and see what happens. I don't think this will be enough to put us as a solid playoff team, but at least it's headed in the right direction.
|
|
Posted by: Sam on July 4, 2008 12:44PM EST
Ed, Dan Boyle is on his way to San Jose. Unless this is the first part of a 3 team trade, with San Jose shipping him here next, then Dan Boyle's not coming to Atlanta.
But he would have been an huge asset.
|
|
Posted by: Steve on July 4, 2008 2:08PM EST
God, I hate being right!! I told you Boyle was leaving! TB wanted him to sign his no trade waiver, and I had a feeling that SJ would get him as they are closer to making the playoffs than we are and Vancouver.
As far as Nikulin goes, if he is big, which he is, and he is good, then great.
Where have Haydar, Sterling, Kwiatowski, and Krog gone to? Haven't heard much about them. Actually, I heard Krog and Kwiatowski are going to Russia to play; are Haydar and Sterling going too?
What about Recchi?

The deal of Boyle is done: http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242464&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl
As much as SJ traded Rivet to Buffalo; so I dont think theres a possibility of a 3-way (Rivet to Buffalo and Carle to TB)...2Bad
Some1 said Wrecchs loves it here the other one said that he vomits on Atl...which one is right?
I hope we resign Recchi and put him an A and Kovy a C...
Also GET DEMITRA AND MORRISON AND WERE GOOD...maybe trade XLB or Klee cause with Bugs-Havlid-Enstrom-Hainsey-Klee or XLB and Nykulinin I think that were good

Waddell has done a WONDERFUL job on this free agent market. We have made the fewest moves of any team in the NHL. If we were as strong as Detroit, I wouldn't mind. However we aren't.
Audette (career highs in ATL), Brunette, Savard, Coburn (Zhitnick, you have GOT to be kidding me), Dafoe (great move), Heatley (Hossa is not as good), Recchi (sign him already), Dupuis, etc., etc.
We need to pick up Morrison, Jason Williams (look at his stats), Nolan, Fedorov (maybe), a goon for fan appeal, sign a #1 goalie (watch Lehts for too long only to be disappointed.)

I hate DW also but heatley wasnt his fault. He couldnt deal with the whole dan snyder incident. He wanted to be traded he couldnt deal with atlanta after killing his team mate. DW was nice and got the best player he could get in hossa.

July 5th, almost midnight now. This write-up is entitled : "Hainsey A Strong Start For Thrashers". It should have read : "Hainsey A Start & Finish For Thrashers"!! Really, that's it? God help us...because DW & the ASG most certainly won't...
