Its not unusual for hockey players to dabble in business ventures on the side so
that they can prepare themselves for their eventual lives after hockey, so it
shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Thrashers goaltender
Johan "Moose" Hedberg is the co-owner of a goaltending and sporting goods
business-
The Goalie Company. The father and
family man is known for his intelligence and attention to detail both on and off
the ice and that has helped the company get off its feet.
"It's something I got involved in at the early stages a few years ago,"
said Hedberg last week in the Thrashers locker room."We've got a puck-shooting
machine that we're trying to get out on the American market. It's by far the
best machine out there. Then there's the Moose Collection. So far it's mostly
goalie jerseys and apparel. We're working on some underwear (for under
equipment) but we need to tweak that a little bit. It's pretty interesting."
Also in development are some workout clothes. They aren't on the market
yet but it's not unusual to see the silver Moose logo splayed across the
backsides of some of the Thrashers.
"They sent me some stuff from home that we're trying out so they could get
my input on it."
Hedberg decided to hand the bulk of it over to his teammates to see what
they thought.
"I have the one pair of shorts," said Jon Sim. "It's good stuff. It has
the big Moose logo on it and that's all that matters. I wear it in the gym for
quick workouts after practice."
The budding entrepeneur also opted to get his gear on the biggest moving
advertisement in the locker room and gave some shorts to defenseman Andy Sutton.
"Ads don't get much bigger than that," laughed Hedberg.
"Yeah...when you put Moose across my butt it makes for a pretty big
billboard," joked Sutton. "I love them. I love representing Moose and they're
great shorts."
So far The Moose Collection and the company's other products are only
being widely distributed in Europe, but they do ship to the United States via
the website which is still under development.
"We're trying to get a good base in Sweden and Norway. Once we get it
built up we'll bring it over here," said Hedberg.
Just don't go looking for the shorts on the website yet. They aren't quite
ready for the North American market (and the website is mostly in Swedish).
"I feel that they're a little bit tight around the bottoms of the boys.
These boys are pretty big. The shorts were made for skinnier people at home,
like soccer players. We're going to need to put some more width on those."
With the recent addition of Tampa Bay goalie Johan Holmqvist as a
busniness partner the company has plenty of name recognition in the hockey
market and should be destined for success, especially with the devoted fan
following that "Moose" has built up over the course of his NHL career.
