Back in the ATL

Wow. It feels like this is the first time I've been at my desk in a month. the Ottawa trip was a whole lot of fun, not to mention tiring, but it was also incredibly valuable. Having had the chance to talk to him a few times now I'm really excited about the John Anderson hire. Hell be in town this week and you'll hear more about a press conference later. I'm also excited about our draft, even if most of these guys are a few years away from playing in Atlanta. I know Waddell and his staff get criticized for their drafting fairly often but the last few years they've done a commendable job- it just takes a while to see the results. I think we'll tart to see those results in the next year or two as guys like Ondrej Pavelec, Boris Valabik, Arturs Kulda, Spencer Machacek and Riley Holzapfel compete for roster spots. Combine them with Bryan Little, Zach Bogosian and Toby Enstrom and that's a lot of potential youth on the roster that came from within.

I think that potential depth is the reason the Thrashers took three college players in this year's draft. With so many recent picks about to go pro and compete for spots in the next two years Waddell could afford to take a more long-term approach after nabbing Bogosian. that's not to say Leveille, Saponari and Redmond couldn't leave school early, but that's not the usual approach of the Thrashers. Not only is keeping players in school good for their development (both on and off the ice), it's also cost-effective.

Speaking of Vinny Saponari, he was in Duluth this morning at the Thrashers' youth summer hockey camp. He was on the ice with the kids and he did at least three TV interviews with local stations. I talked to him for a few minutes and I should have an article up on him sometime today or tomorrow if all goes well. It's a big deal for hockey in Georgia to have a kid that grew up going to Thrashers hockey camp get drafted by the hometown team.

I'm about to start writing up my own draft review but in the meantime here is one from NHL.com.

We all recognize that draft picks take time to develop, and maybe we are about to see some results. The biggest complaint is where are all the draft picks that should be contributing now.

Let's say it takes 2-3 years for top 2 round picks to develop, given that we have been drafting for 10 years we should see 8-10 picks who are contributing to this team. Apart from Kovalchuk and Enstrom how many top 2 forward line or top 2 D pairing picks do we have?

Maybe the past few years drafts have been good, but there is not a whole lot to show for the first 4 or 5, apart from the can't miss picks of Kovalchuk, Heatley and (maybe) Lehtonen.

You cn say the past few years have been good but until they preform at the NHL level it is all just talk and considering the past record of drafting high and coming away withlittlee to nothing I would not be so quick to say these kids will work out.

Dany Heatley would have been a huge drafting success story had he been able to stay here. Our PP would look a whole lot different.

Kari's been a success. And Garnet Exelby has contributed well, too. Coburn ended up having a good season...just not for us.

The Thrash changed the head of our scouting staff a couple years back. Wonder if there's a story there and what the influence of that move may be (if any).

The trade of 1st-round-pick Alex Bourret for Dupuis and what turned into Thorburn is actually looking like a good deal now. That is good for the team, but not good for the scouts. That year the team passed on Kopitar and Marc Staal to land him.

I see your point Robert but keep in mind that they used one of the picks they got for trading down to draft Ondrej Pavelec, so don't think of it purely as Bourret for Thorburn.

What ????
Thorburn was picked up in the off season for a third round pick
Thorburn and Bourret have nothing to do with one another
And Thorburn is not a top prospect anyway he would be a call up at best on any other team. He is 25 and has only played 1 full season in the NHL and it is with the 3rd from the bottom thrashers.
Also Bourret and Pavelec both went to Atlanta in the 2005 draft so what pick are you talking about?

who is gonna step up next year for the thrashers?we only had 1 player that scored 20 or more goals and we know who that was.i think thats the only team with only 1 goal scorer over 20 goals, ilya kovalchuk.the GM has to be considering to aquire some more goal scorers?what does everyone think?
