Armstrong and Christensen Settling In

The Thrashers didn't practice today due to flight delays that kept them from
getting home until close to 5am, but that didn't stop Colby Armstrong (known in Pittsburgh as Army) and Erik
Christensen from taking to the ice for 20 minutes on their own. They got in last
night (they flew during the Thrashers game in Montreal so they didn't see the
loss) and were anxious to stretch their legs so they put on their new gear and
put in a somewhat awkward on-ice workout. Armstrong commented afterwards that it
was weird skating with just the two of them on the ice, but he was blown away
with how nice the practice facility was. Apparently Pittsburgh's practice rink
isn't anything special, and Atlanta's is one of the better in the league,
especially for one its age.
After speaking to the media (look for them on the evening news tonight,
including 11Alive) Armstrong and Christensen met a few of their teammates who
were trickling in for off-ice workouts (despite the cancelled practice some guys
have trouble staying away from the week). The new guys were excited to learn
that their old teammate Joel Kwiatkowski was still around, and they already knew
Chris Thorburn and Mark Recchi. Armstrong also knows Mark Popovic somehow, but
I'll have to look in to the connection there (probably a Team Canada tie). After
chatting with some of the players about game day habits, team dress codes,
tickets, and other things that are good to know as an incoming player Armstrong
and Christensen left with Mark Recchi who is quickly taking them under his wing.
Armstrong and Christensen were both drafted by the Penguins and neither one was
expecting to get dealt. They're leaving a lot of friends behind in Pittsburgh
and having someone they know like Mark Recchi in the locker room is going to
make the transition a whole lot easier for them. Not only do they know him well
from Pittsburgh, but he has been traded enough times that he can give them some
advice on how to deal with it.
Later in the afternoon Don Waddell addressed the media and took questions
about the trade (more on that in an article going up later tonight). Waddell
wasn't able to say exactly where Armstrong and Christensen will fit in the
lineup, but expect the lines to have a different look. Here's what he did share:
- Colby Armstrong will play on the right wing on a yet-to-be determined
line (my guess would be the third line in the spot cleared by Stuart being
sent to Chicago today)
- Christensen can play any forward position but is a natural center. He'll
be playing on the second line tomorrow night with undetermined linemates.
- Bryan Little thoroughly impressed Don Waddell last night and earned the
right to play again against the Islanders.
- Waddell likes the way Kovy, White and Recchi have played together
lately, but he may break that line up.
If you can dig through all of those hints and come up with a lineup you're
one step ahead of me.
Finally (for now), if you were curious about what numbers the new players
will be wearing Christensen will wear 9 and Armstrong is going with 19. Both
players will play tomorrow night.

Excellent update... thanks ben.
Glad to see these two guys are excited... they could have easily taken it hard. I like them already.

I say welcome to the new guys, but I don't think anyone should wear #19 this season at all out of respect for Scott Mellanby. His jersey will never hang from our rafters, but out of respect for his career, no one should take that number - at least not this year.

Christensen (known in Pgh as Crusher).
It's so great to hear that they have Rex to settle them in. I'm glad they've got the three of them (and hey, Thorburn and Kiwi too!) to flock together. Funny the way things work out.
Rex-Crusher-Army Pittsburgh line?

I went to practice today. I had guessed it was an initiation prank of some kind. Both wore the light blue practice jerseys.

Sweet, I'm really excited to see these guys in our lineup!!
Here's just how I would like to see the lines:
Kovy-Little-Perrin Kozzy-Christensen-Recchi White-Holik-Armstrong Boulton-Slater-Thorburn
I had a hard time choosing between Recchi and Perrin for the first line RW position, but I chose Perrin for the simple fact that he has earned this oppertunity.

I really wish we had Army back, we took a loss in loosing him. Atlantas got 6 of our old guys now. I wish Armstrong and Christenson the best of luck...It's great that they have Recchi to go to in a time like this.

I've heard Pens fans call him Army. We can't take credit for that. Christensen = Crusher.
My hope:
Kovy-Little-Recchi Kozy-Crusher-Perrin Army-Holik-White Boulton-Slater-Thorburn
Very disappointed to see White sent down. He needs the experience up here to get ready for his full time gig next year.
And no clue why Kiwi is staying up here. 8 defensemen???? Please dear god tell me they'd waive Sh!tnik?????

I'm so sad that I'm going to be watching this one from home because I'm coughing up a lung, but it should be a good game, or at least a good chance to watch these boys (Army and Crusher, I like that. CRUSHER) play.
I can't wait to see how the lines pan out today and maybe we'll get to see Army deliver a devastating hit on one the Islanders! Finally, we've got someone who's not afraid to HIT SOMEBODY!
Good luck tonight boys!

Atlanta is VERY fortunate to obtain these great players. Living in Pittsburgh and being able to watch all of the young talent has been great, we wish Army and Eric all the best

Please...please...break up every line combination that the Thrashers have going right now except for the Greek God Line (4th line)...
NOTHING IS WORKING, SWITCH THINGS UP...
Get recchi OFF Kovys line..the chemistry is GONE, if there ever WAS any...
Kovy Little Perrin......... ? ? ? ? ? ? Greek God Line lol, thats all I can truly think of without seeing these other guys play....sorry...lol
oh yah, and scratch Zhitnik and Larsen...their "tryout" is DONE..
PUT MAC AND POPS BACK IN!! ARGHHHH

Why was Tuart sent down? I think that guy deserves it, but oh well. he might be good enough to stick around next year. I love the idea of Little and Kovy together, I think Little has the speed Kovy needs and is an intense player at times. I also like the idea of throwing Army up there with him. he played with Crosby, he could play with Kovy. I am sure we will see it at some point.

Why don't you let the Thrashers move to a real hockey city like Winnipeg, Hamilton, or Quebec City? Atlanta, TB, Miami, Dallas, Phoenix, and LA have no right having hockey teams. Hockey belongs to the northern USA and Canada. You can have basketball and soccer.

Obviously an angry pens fan. Our NBA team sells about 2000 tickets a game opposed to the thrasher 14,000... For a while we were doing better (as far a fans) than the wings.
